Patrik Laine Named Finnish Playoff MVP
April 26th, 2016
BY Dustin L. Nelson

The Finnish season concluded Tuesday with Tappara Tampere taking the championship in a 2-1 Game 6 win over HIFK. It’s Tappara’s first championship since 2003. Their young star Patrik Laine was named the winner of the 2016 Jari Kurri Trophy for playoff MVP.

Laine is a 2016-draft eligible forward who has been tearing up the Finnish league at a very young age.

Through 18 playoff games, Laine posted 10 goals and 15 points. He was tied for third overall in points and led Tappara. His 10 goals led all players in the postseason.

Laine, a Tampere native, turned 18 just last week and though he ranks behind Auston Matthews in most 2016 draft rankings, placing him at the second overall prospect in this summer’s draft, he has almost a full year less pro experience than Matthews.

Patrik Laine Named MVP of World Championship

Though he didn’t get the result he was hoping for in the gold medal match Sunday, 18-year-old Finnish forward Patrik Laine won MVP of the 2016 IIHF World Championship.

Laine put up the second most points by a U19 player in history with 12 points in 10 games, just short of Sidney Crosby’s 16 points. His seven goals were the most by any player in the tournament, and his 12 points ranked fourth.

Winnipeg Jets pick Patrik Laine at NHL entry draft

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The lottery enhanced No. 2 pick went as expected for the Winnipeg Jets Friday night, bringing sniper Patrik Laine of Finland to the NHL team.

Of course the Jets were happy, so much so that even GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was out of his comfort zone of guarded words and restrained outlook.

"It’s a very exciting time for the franchise, from the time we won the lottery we knew we were going to have the opportunity to get a very special player," Cheveldayoff gushed after Friday’s first round of the NHL Draft at First Niagara Center.

"Meeting (Laine) at the combine, we had some great conversations and some good laughs and I think it’s going to be a really good fit for the city of Winnipeg and our franchise."

Cheveldayoff even went so far as to say he expects the 18-year-old left-winger from Tampere, Finland, to be on the Jets roster next season.

"I think a player like this, watching him play at the World Championships, he should be ready to play," he said.

Cheveldayoff had teased reporters and fans for more than a week, saying he was locked in on his top draft pick. Of course, he wasn’t revealing the name ahead of time.

"You watch him play and he does some very special things," the GM said about his reasons for certainty. "Watch the tape and you see him do little, subtle things that you don’t really see in the game. Some of the things he does defensively. He understands the game very, very well. He’s not just a goal-scorer, a shooter.

"And the bigger the stage, the better he played."

I wonder what a thread consisting solely of OPs from Laine threads would look like. The scrolling would never end

I remember last fall when people talked about Chychrun being the undisputable #2 pick and how they ridiculed us who suggested Laine or Pulju was better because Chychrun is in a higher tier altogether

Good player with a ton of talent. We'll see how he does, but I just have a feeling he might not be as impactful as people expect. It depends on how much he improves his skating though, the NHL is a really quick league so his hands and foot speed have to be quick.

Jets fans' reactions at Investors Group Field to the Patrik Laine selection:

This occurred before the Winnipeg Blue Bombers game at the stadium.

But the main question: will Patrik quit hockey to become a baseball player?

"I've always wanted to be a baseball player."

Move over, NASCAR.

Laine at 6'4 201+ makes the Jets Top 6 core a real mix of size and skill. They can play it anyway you want.

Scheifele and Wheeler are similar sized. Add on Little, Ehlers and Connor as medium size guys. It's a terrific mix.

You really admire how the Jets are building this team. A team that is going to be fun to watch.

There's a Jets billboard right behind him in that third photograph.

He also really likes that hat; he wears it everywhere. What logo is that?

It's been there ever since the new terminal opened shortly after the Jets returned. The picture gets updated periodically Here's an older version

Why is it so specified? could've just gone with "highest U18 player"
A big deal was made at the time that he had surpassed all other U-19 players in scoring except Sidney Crosby.
Minnesota Twins cap insignia.
And so it is.

He even wore it during the draft opening slate (0:52, 1:28, 1:48 of the video):

He says that he likes to be himself, so I'm guessing the hat was important.

Here's an old 2014 photograph of him with the hat:

Here's another with the hat.

Has he mayhap been watching a game in Minnesota some time back, and picked up the Twins cap then? I wouldn't think MLB caps are quite so freely available in Finland.

The last time I saw calves that thin was in middle school. It can only be a good thing when you already look powerful on the ice without any muscle mass. God damn that guy is going to be a beast when he fills up the frame.

The room he has left to develop physically and with his skating is part of what makes it hard to figure out how high Laine's ceiling as an NHL player really is.
