heck - we might need him to stay at the cap floor.

Pretty much this. Even Florida has Bolland at 5 million. We have 2 years left on the Lupul contract. Doubt he plays more than 40 games/year anyway. He'll be gone before the next gen ELCs are up anyway.

Right now the team has at least $47M committed next season not counting what the team will have to pay Kadri and Rielly plus another goalie, up to 3 more defensemen and a half dozen forwards. The cap floor will be the least of a worry and if it were, it would be something that could be exploited in a positive way.

I would hope that they could send him to a team for a worse player with less term.

Lupul straight up for

Ron Hainsey
Brad Stuart
Ondrej Pavelec

Before the Phaneuf deal I though the Sens were a good option with one or two the the same guys coming back

Same year Lupul comes off the books JT will join them! So basically we will drop a plug and invest 5 mil more per for a Superstar to compliment Stamkos and the ELC studs! I am loving where everything is heading!

What do we need the space for? I'm not thrilled with the guy, but I don't get why we're desperate to move him.
... I was just thinking, depending on who is kept/picked up for next year There may be only so many spots for present Marlies moving up. Just gives us room for one more. I'd rather a young kid get the opportunity to play rather than an overpaid veteran not in the future plans. It's a shame though. Lupul was playing very well up until his last concussion in that Philly game a few years back.

Not a chance - he is injured most of the time. He is probably done, once his contract expire

Year Contract Cap Hit Buyout Cost Buyout Savings Buyout Cap Hit
2016-17 $5,250,000 $1,500,000 $3,750,000 $1,500,000
2017-18 $5,250,000 $1,500,000 $2,250,000 $3,000,000
2018-19 $0 $1,500,000 -$1,500,000 $1,500,000
2019-20 $0 $1,500,000 -$1,500,000 $1,500,000

A Lupul buyout would actually not be too bad. Only one year that would really suck. I think it'd be better to just leave him on the 4th line/scratch him until his deal is up, no use in prolonging his effect on the salary cap.

Was it not 2 seasons ago there was a rumour Los Angeles was interested in Lupul and the Leafs wanted Tyler Toffoli in return? I remember the Kings didn't want to give him up and instead they traded for Marian Gaborik.
