Edmonton Fans Listen:
You have 2 options here
Buy him out
or
trade him along with a nice asset like the Leafs had to, to rid them selves of Marleau's contract
except.... Lucic had 4 years left compared to Marleau's 1 year.
Price is going to be more expensive than a 1st.

To BOS:
Lucic (NMC) - 4 years until UFA - 6 million AAV

To EDM:

Backes (8 team Trade List) - 2 years until UFA - 6 million AAV

I think a proposal built around Lucic and Backes is realistic and makes sense, both for them and their respective franchises. Of course, each player would have to play ball. And EDM likely adds a bit.

Lucic is having the worst years of his career in Edmonton. He'd return to Boston in a heartbeat for a chance at rekindling that old flame. It's no secret Edmonton wants to move him as he's been a complete bust.

As for Backes, his playing time has been limited. He's often been a healthy scratch. Perhaps he would okay the trade if it meant more playing time, and being on a roster that includes McDavid provides some hope to win that elusive Cup.

EDM does this for obvious reasons. 2 years of Backes is better than 4 years of Lucic.

As for BOS, maybe they have faith that Lucic would return to his old form and be the player they thought Backes was when they signed him.
" FAITH " we are talking hockey here, get real.......

1. Backes is a cheap buy out

2. Backes only has 2 years vs Lucic's 4

3. Lucic has to be protected in the next expansion draft

I love Lucic, and definitely would take him for the bottom 6 with heavy retention by Edmonton...but this deal is an easy no

What about Lucic @ 4M (2M Retained) for Backes? Makes it Backes for 8M*2 and 2M*2 and Lucic at 4M*4. Boston likely retools in a few years and gets some short term relief, Edmonton gets out of the contract earlier as they go through they're current retool.

Money is not a problem. Term is. Term for term, Backes has more value.

Even looking at it money-wise, Backes is only owed $5M over the next two seasons so he is cheaper as well.

Here's as close as the Oilers can get to getting rid of him (read through the LA trade proposal last week):

To Boston:

2020 1st
RW Puljujarvi
LW Lucic (50% Retained)

To Edmonton:

RW David Backes

Lucic and two 1sts and retaining half of his salary with him agreeing to waive his NTC in the final year so the Bruins don't have to protect him. Seattle won't take him and he'll finish as a Bruin but he won't be protected so they don't lose the space.

Okay explain how that is in anyway good for Edmonton, or rather how that's better than just playing Lucic on the 4th line. They add 3 mil to the cap over the next two years, and give up Pulju and a first to gain 3 mil in years 3 and 4.

Lucic at 3 mil for 4 years isn't great, but it's hardly to the point of needing to give up a 1st, a good prospect, and take back a 6mil 4th liner for 2 years.

Chiarelli was fired from Boston, so let's trade for one of his mistakes!?!

Lucic 50% retained and Puljujarvi for Backas. Solid deal for both teams.

That is still a bad deal for Boston and a horrible deal if Lucic doesn't waive his NMC.

Puljujarvi likely doesn't make the Bruins in the next 3 years at least, if he ever does. Lucic only makes the Bruins based on his contract because on his ability he isn't close to making the roster.

It makes more sense for the Bruins to just keep Backes for two years and be free of the terrible deal then.

How does it go from a bad to horrible deal if he dosent waive to Boston? Wouldn’t it then just be Puljujarvi for Backas?

No I meant if he doesn't waive his NMC when he gets to Boston so that he would have to protected in the expansion draft.

I have read some things saying that just by agreeing to waive it once does not automatically waive it for the new team once the player is there. If Lucic has to be protected in expansion draft his value plummets even more than it is just with his terrible play and contract.

You can get Lucic to waive the NMC for the purposes of the expansion draft. Seattle isn't going to take him, and they can get a verbal commitment to that effect. The expansion draft angle isn't that big of a deal.

I remember Looch as a badass power forward who poured his heart and soul into every game... even if that's an exaggeration.

I would rather my memory of him in the black and gold stay that way.

From a Boston POV, they have Backes (6 million), Krejci (7.25 million) and Rask (7 million) all coming off the books in two years. Even if they bring back Rask, having that kind of $$$ to throw around doesn't happen too often for big market teams. The Bruins could try to have an offseason like the one that brought them Chara and Savard. Moving from Backes to Lucic messes that up. Besides, Puju does not have that kind of value anymore.

Bruins got rid of Lucic because they knew his best hockey was behind him with his original play style, and was obviously going to get a big contract.. No way Sweeney wants him back now.. unless he is given
