To Vancouver: Kessel

To Arizona: Eriksson, Juolevi, 2021 2nd rd pick

Vancouver add an offensive RW to their top 6 while also dumping Eriksson's contract

Unlikely to contend in the coming years, and with 4 D-men set to hit UFA after this season, Arizona looks to build for the future by adding a talented young D-man with upside in Juolevi, and a 2nd rd pick in next year's draft

Juolevi has positive value? Enough to compensate for LE?

So basically you are asking for Kessel?

Juolevi has very little value and it will take at least a 2nd just to get rid of Eriksson.

You aren't getting Kessel for that.

Does Kessel have positive value at this point?

He's a 33 year old winger with 2 years left on his deal at a cap hit of nearly 7 million per, and he's coming off a season in which he had 14 goals, 38 points, and was a -21 in 70 games...

So, which teams do you think would not only be interested in Kessel, but would also willing to beat the offer in the OP?

No way were giving up on Juolevi just like this. So easy. No way, he has played good in his first ever 2 nhl games and we need to be patient and especially to a tam like the Coyotes. Replace him with Chatfield in this proposal who himself has some huge untapped potential and perhaps that can get rid of the Eriksson contract

There are a lot of teams who might be interested in Kessel. He's probably worth a late 1st at the deadline. He's not completely washed up after 1 mediocre season on a bad Coyotes team.

Name some... and what would their offers look like?

We'll wait and see who is around at the deadline and where they are in the standings.

Maybe the Lightning trade a late 1st + Gaborik's expiring LTIR contract? Much better offer. No shitty second year like Eriksson. A better pick too.

Islanders can do the same thing with Boychuk + a 1st if they're doing well. Boychuk costs even less than Erikson in real dollars in the 2nd year while sitting on LTIR (which the Coyotes can't do with Eriksson)

Vegas has Fleury they want to dump and might be in 1st.

Tons of contenders have options for a guy like Kessel.

Gaborik is on LTIR, so his salary doesn't count against Tampa's cap... they wouldn't be able to fit Kessel's cap hit this season, never mind next year when Kucherov's 9.5 million salary will be back in the lineup

Boychuk's on LTIR, so his salary doesn't count against New York's cap... they don't have room under their cap for Kessel's 6.8 million salary

Fleury has 2 years left on his deal, and is owed more money than Kessel, so I fail to see why Fleury and a late 1st has more value than Eriksson, Juolevi, and a 2nd

Tampa and the Islanders can clear the cap space a hundred ways.

The Gaborik/Boychuk thing was just to show that other teams have cap dumps for specific Kessel trade to match salary without burdening Arizona.

Fleury is a legitimate NHL goaltender. Erikson is completely done as a player.

Ehh.. its alright. Certainly I would prefer Kessel to Eriksson. However... Juolevi is just starting to finally (FINALLY!) play in the NHL. Would suck to give up now.

Its probably a moot point though. Kessel is in an ideal situation in Arizona, location-wise. He also has a pretty restrictive NTC.

Also, Kessel is one of Arizona's few true top 6 players. Replacing him with Eriksson is a huge downgrade.

Like I said in the OP, Arizona isn't likely to contend in the coming years, so an immediate downgrade to their lineup is of little consequence...

The Coyotes have a log jam @ D with Capobianco and Soderstrom likely to make the team before the end of the season.
Losing 4 in free agency is a good thing!

The Lightning and Islanders couldn't fit Kessel's salary into their cap space by trading Gaborik and Boychuk, so you've only given one team (Vegas) that would be willing to trade for Kessel, but I question why you think Fleury + a late 1st is a better return than Eriksson, Juolevi, + a mid 2nd

Fleury, who turned 36 in late November and who is coming off a season in which he finished 39th among goalies in SV%, shouldn't be considered anything other than a backup at this point in his career

Same ones that have been posted all offseason, but Tampa/NYI has been unwilling to pay to get rid of them: Tyler Johnson and Leo Komarov.
It's like you didn't take a second to look at Tampa's cap. We are over the cap next year with 16 players signed. And your suggestion is we clear cap space to add Phil Kessel...at least make an effort to do some research before you throw things out there.

After all this time, how do people still not understand how LTIR works? LTIR contracts still count towards the cap. It isn't just magically removed from your total cap.

By next year, Johnson's NTC is a M-NTC and they can get rid of him easier...or they might give some incentive to lose him to Seattle. Everyone is going to lose someone good to Seattle as well don't forget.

Further, nothing is stopping Tampa from renting Kessel for a deadline and then passing him off again in the offseason. The trade to get Kessel might be a way to SOLVE cap problems if one of Gourde/Johnson is willing to play in Arizona. Maybe Arizona WANTS a top-6 player who is signed a bit more long-term than Kessel

Kessel + retention + pick for Gourde + Nilsson + Gaborik + late 1st. I'd have to check the math, but I'm pretty sure it won't change Tampa's cap situation and won't change dollars. It might actually simplify a few things as only Kucherov will be on LTIR for Tampa at that point. Kessell will waive for Tampa easily. If Tampa loses Johnson to expansion, they will now only have 1 more year of Kessel at around 5.5M which opens room for Point's new contarct.

Just be creative. Edit: id o have to check out Kessel's retention though to see how much Arizona can retain, Tampa's situation is particularly tight.

Edit: 2: Also, even if Arizona doesn't want Johnson//Gourde, someone else might, Tampa can make a separate deal with another team. The whole advantage of Kessel is that he is very skill/productive, reasonably cheap with retention and won't cost an arm and a leg. (because of his NTC). For Tampa, the advantage isn't so much saving dollars TODAY or next season, but dollars in 2022 when they have Point coming up for a new contract.

Ridiculous to suggest that the isles, with a weak prospect pool and facing another cap crunch next offseason, would attach a 1st to Boychuk's LTIR for Kessel.
