Ferland's problem was he needed to play with reckless abandon to be effective, and playing with reckless abandon led to all of his injuries, which didn't allow him to play like that any longer.

I think Rod soured on him being in and out of the line-up, which would frustrate a coach. I know some on here were speculating that he didn't want to make his injuries worse because he didn't want to miss out on his next big UFA contract. None of us will know if that had any merit, but if it did, it was a smart move on his part. Got his $14M contract, played 14 games and never played again due to injuries.
