If they could sign TDA for $1.5M or so, that’d be awesome. There might be a real chance he’d take that too. Not like other teams were beating down doors to acquire him at 50% retention.
Based on his comments before the trade deadline, TDA is looking to play. More than $$, more than a chance to win, he wants to play hockey.

That may be available in Carolina next year, but I doubt he signs early. He will want to know if Pesce is coming back, if Chatfield is coming back, if Morrow signs, and who Carolina goes after in FA/trades.

Lemieux OTOH realizes he is a 4th line player or 13th forward anywhere he goes. He's happy to be in a place where the team is winning and he knows his contributions are appreciated when he plays.

He comes in cold and plays the game Rod wants. Can't ask for more out of a 13th forward.

i like it. and honestly, i could see him playing pretty regularly next year. having a steady 4th liner like him at league minimum is just what the doctor ordered for our potential cap situation.

on tda, i wonder if he would do another year cheap. given there doesn't seem to be much interest around the league, and he still has 1.6 million coming from philly next year, i think it is a real possibility.

Yeah TDA would be one of those late July early August signings likely.

I wonder... when Rod (?) spoke of guys who left for bigger paycheck and then called back to tell they've made a great mistake leaving, we all assumed that might be TDA he's talking about. Obviously he's been a healthy scratch here since and didn't enjoy that either, but... I would guess, IF Tony goes to free agency and doesn't get signed elsewhere in the first week, he may be in haste to sign with Canes before the music ends and all the chairs are gone in here too.

A big reason why we signed TDA was to help our PP. Well, not only has he not done that, but our PP is 3rd in the league without him in the lineup for most of the year. I'd struggle to see why we'd bring him back instead of giving a defensive prospect a chance to make the league

The thing about breaking in one of the D prospects, assume Morrow here, the team under RBA hasn’t developed a young D.

Fleury - traded, nothing more than 3rd pair

Bean - looked good for a while, traded, flaming out in Columbus

Forsling - looked real good in preseason(to me at least) gets waived cause they don’t want to lose Fluery and the rest is history

Can’t think of anyone else. The team was gifted Slavin and Pesce on sweetheart deals by Francis and they’ve mostly done an excellent job trading for or signing D (Gardiner aside) to supplement Slavin and Pesce. Those days are soon to be over.

I don’t have any doubt that they’ll figure it out and expect next years blueline to still be the strength of the team, although likely not as strong as this year’s version. I also don’t see RBA having the patience for a young D , such as Morrow, to learn on the job. TDA already knows the system, and if you put him with another D who also knows the system (Skjei or Slavin), the results are generally good.

I suppose I just think they’d be more likely to re-up TDA for cheap, if he were willing to sign, than actually give a rookie D meaningful minutes. They may have to rely on Morrow regardless next year though for cap reasons. Also, they may have to promise him some NHL time to entice him to sign.

Caveat - I don’t think the above sentiment applies to Nikishin. He’s proven he’s in his own league.

Chatfield. Yeah I know he had a season or two in the Vancouver system, but dude did basically all his development with the Canes org after he signed with us when the Canucks non-tendered him.

I was surprised when the early struggle of the power play never saw DeAngelo out there as a 7th pp specialist for more than a game or two.

If it were a locker room issue he'd be 86'd, so I guess RBA just doesn't trust him w/o a Slavin to babysit

Chatty is the one exception, and even that I think was just a reverse-Forsling situation. A guy who was on the cusp but just not in the right org/situation and then when he switched, also flipped a switch and flourished.

I do think this FO has generally struggled with identifying young d-men to draft and then developing them. But most of those guys have also had weird development paths due to covid screwing up the world. Sellgren when he first came over looked like he could be a solid jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none type guy, but seemed to regress that 2nd season. Fleury isn't totally on this group but he also never could take that next step. Fensore was always a crapshot/project guy given his size, Webber was the reverse drafted more for size than skill, and Honka has been bounced around due to Covid and the AHL situation. He seems like the kind of guy that maybe could have become something if developed well. Same with Joey Keane. Seeley was a longshot that I think also got screwed by the AHL situation. We NEED to get that AHL thing sorted out so we can get guys over here to get a better hand in their development to really make fair assessments.

But on the topic of the topic, absolutely 0 complaints about giving Lemieux an extension. He's a perfect #12/13 guy, got some physicality and fight and isn't totally useless with the puck. Probably don't want him higher than 3rd line even in a worst-case scenario, but he's done his job well. He took a dirty hit last night and immediately made the guy pay (since it was clear the refs weren't)
