As a musician that can play 3 instruments... I still have no idea how you can notice that on a casual listen.

to be honest, I don't quite have perfect pitch where I can instantly identify a tone. I usually need to think about it for a sec, usually recalling songs I know (e.g. "that song I know is in G, so the tone I'm hearing sounds like a major third above it, so must be a B").
