Mentioned it in other threads, it would be nice to pick up one of Trouba, Brodin, Barrie, or Dumba, and one of Murray, Samsonov, Vasilevskiy. Start building up the back end.

I think that trading for a D man is not as likely as it is that we draft one this year. If we are going to trade for a D man I do not believe it would be until after the expansion Draft, so we can protect more of our current players.

If we can land Zaitsev and a quality veteran that can play in the top 4, we should be ok.

how about
Rielly-Marincin (who has been playing out of this world great)
Gardiner-Zaitsev (by end of season, prolly not initially)
Hunwick-Carrick
then the battlers, Valiev, Percy, Harrington, whomever

As of now, I see protecting for the expansion draft Rielly, Gardiner and Marincin.
Don't think Zaitsev will be elegible.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this - but I think an ideal situation would be if Brian Campbell has trouble getting a contract - sign him for a 1 or 2 year at a reasonable amount ($2million-ish).

We're going to have a LOT of young kids on the back end, and he has spent a lot of time teaching / coaching young D men in Florida.

The perfect scenario is to grab a couple of solid vets to teach the kids for 3/4 of the year - and solid D vets have great deadline value.

I don't think Corrado and percy are resigned.

Reilly Marincin
Gardiner Zaitsev
Hunwick Carrick
Harrington

With Valiev or Loov taking hunwicks spot once hes traded.

Ideally Hunwick is traded and you sign Demers.

Reilly Demers
Gardiner Zaitsev
Marincin Carrick
Harrington

Honestly, I've wondered about this scenario too. I'd be very intrigued to see if he'd be interested in a hometown run (Strathroy is about 90 minutes from Toronto) as he winds down his career. Honestly, short of trading for Letang (which I am not advocating or bashing), there may not be a better mentor type for Rielly and Gardiner.

I like the idea of adding a vet in principal. Campbell is not the guy because he porn sky gets more than 2mill per and he's also too close to Robidas territory for me.

The ideal scenario would be to add another Hunwick type to the mix. Who can eat up minutes and insulate the inevitable call ups like Valiev and Loov.

I personally don't touch the UFA market for d-men. There are enough adequate ones in our organization that you've outlined, plus adding Zaitzev. No need to add salary when we've taken on Laich, Michalek and Greening.

That is pretty much the lineup. Trade Percy, send down Loov. Nothing else to it. Zaitsev is hardly a small addition after all.

By having Rielly and gards on different pairs, which is smart, you run into the question of who plays first pair with Rielly long term. If you think Marincin is the answer your all good.
Still have to draft a dman in the first round. And I'd be on board with signing a Campbell type vet to insulate for a couple years.

Not a bad idea. However, I would doubt that he'd sign for so little.

He'd be an ideal candidate to be exposed to an expansion draft as well.

I would also avoid trading for a #1 or #2 D until after any expansion draft. Well, unless it was a no brainer that is.

I still think we should try and trade for a Trouba/Barrie/Lindholm type, but Zaitsev looks good from what little I watched.

Personally I would love to see us trade Gardiner, sign Zaitsev, another capable vet LD on the cheap and promote from within. It would be a pretty porous defense next year, but lots of promise.

I'm sure people will laugh at me for wanting to trade Gardiner, but I've never been a big Gardiner fan :P

If we get Zaitsev, no need to add another defenseman.
If we draft Chychrun then move Harrington down, trade Hunwick and insert Chychrun on the 3rd pairing.

Is it a great D? No, but it is a developing and skilled D that will have it´s nights of pure domination when every one is flying. But also nights when we will shake our heads. Like it should be with a developing team.

Wishful thinking. My understanding is that the Panthers are pretty happy with Brian Campbell. 31 points, team-leading +31, I'd be surprised if he signed anywhere for less than $4M.

Being able to somehow get Trouba would be huge. Very unlikely though.

I also don't see us making a big move for a Dman this off-season. That opportunity probably won't come till next off-season when expansion looks likely.

Trading for a Dman without it costing a fortune to acquire said Dman makes sense to happen shortly before the expansion draft then we would protect that Dman.

As it stands we've only got 2 Dmen worth protecting in Rielly + Gardiner where teams like the Wild, Ducks, Sens, Jets, Caps, Blue Jackets and Islanders all have their # 4 Dman as a more valuable piece than what we have as an option to protect as our # 3 Dman in either Marincin or Carrick.

It's easy to say 'trade Gardiner.' How about giving us some ideas as to what the return would be. :dunno:
