Liked him in Nashville. Mostly because of his consistency, and oh ya, his OT goal over the Ducks in the playoffs.

Think a less offensive version of Mcclement. Veteran presence.

AHL tryout...he would not be a replacment for McClement. Think Paul Ranger last year who was on an AHL only contract...also this is only a tryout at this point.

True, but who's to say if there were catastrophic injuries that he couldn't sign an NHL deal shortly after? Ranger could have signed a deal last year but he insisted that he wanted to spend the whole year in the AHL getting acclimated. I agree with you, but it's certainly not definitive.

Maybe he's just there to teach some of the youngsters how to win draws. He's good at them.

Should add a stabilizing presence for all the young prospects we have on the Marlies. Plus he could follow Ranger's lead and sign a deal with the big team if all goes well. It wouldn't be a bad option to have a guy like him on the 4th line.

I haven't been able to follow the Marlies too closely, but there appears to be some room at forward with plugs like Macleod, Legein, and Duco getting game-time, plus Kenny Ryan out injured.

I like how some how AHL try-out jumps to 4th line NHL regular.

Take it as what it is for now.

I think people are referring to what he has been.

Could be a solid depth move if he signs. The Leafs are lacking depth at centre. Probably better than Smith for the 4th line if someone goes down - which is bound to happen at some point.

Marlies wise, I love the fact how the team is expected to have a year of ups and downs due to youth, but so far they are playing as contenders for the Calder Cup.

I hope a guy like Smithson can teach some of the youngsters and provide something like what Zigs brought to the Marlies (minus the offence).

6'3" defensive center 34 years old.

Technically, Smithson’s been a deadline pickup two years in a row — in 2011-12, Florida acquired him from Nashville for its playoff push, and he proceeded to appear in five of the Panthers’ seven postseason games that spring.

He’s a good defensive forward and something of a faceoff specialist. Toronto is relatively thin in terms of center depth, so it’s possible he could get a look in the Leafs’ bottom six at some point this year.

Report: Jerred Smithson to try out for Marlies

http://editorinleaf.com/2013/10/15/...ed&utm_medium=Network&utm_campaign=Hot+Topics

The Leafs have yet to make any official announcement, and Kypreos seems to be the only source reporting it, so the news should be taken with at least one grain of salt, if not a whole tablespoon. But the addition of Smithson makes a lot of sense, as the Marlies roster currently only has three centres listed: Greg McKegg, Andrew Crescenzi and Sam Carrick. Marlies captain Trevor Smith was called up to the Leafs today, but is probably only up as insurance in case James van Riemsdyk can’t play tonight due to injury.

Smithson is 34 years old and carries 588 games of NHL experience with him, scoring 96 points in his career. Smithson began last year with the Florida Panthers and was traded to the Edmonton Oilers at the trade deadline for a fourth-round pick. He’s not a scorer by any means, but at least he’s proved himself capable of playing on an NHL fourth line. At the very, very least, maybe he can provide some Obi-Wan Kenobi-type leadership and guidance to the young Marlies on a cheap contract.

Wow, nice move for the Marlies. Surprised it's only a tryout, he was a really solid 4th line C. The dude can win draws, I'd like to see him with the Leafs at some. He's like a better skating but slightly lesser faceoff-skill Steckel

Plenty of pros have been without work because of the cap, not saying this is the case but it's something to keep in mind. A guy like Raymond couldn't even get a contract, guys like Smithson don't stand much of a chance.
