I'm sure this will fix all of their problems and they will ride off into the sunset after keeping their core together the entire time

Who said that is the plan? Tavares has next year and is a UFA. Marner has 1 more year and a UFA. If this deal happens, thhey have Matthews, Nylander, Kampf and Jarnkrok signed that season. on D they will have Rielly and LIljegren. In goal Woll.

Basically, the Leafs have a ton of assets and cap flexibility to completely do a retool in a season or two and still have years of Matthews left to compete.

I don't quite understand why the Leafs need to offer him that much, since Nylander won't realistically get a better offer in Free Agency (and by "better offer"), I mean North of 12 M at the very least for max term (since Nylander probably wants term if he's ready to agree to an 8 year deal).

That means they still have to fill out their roster with FIFTEEN players with, what, $35 million? We’ve seen that the core 4 + Reilly just isn’t good enough to win a cup on their own so you need a good supporting cast around them. How many ELC’s/sub-$1 million contracts are you pencilling in to bring in solid players to replace McCabe, Bertuzzi, Domi or Brodie? They would all need to outplay their cap hit as is, and a slump or single injury to one of the big guns makes the team almost useless. This deal is crippling to the franchise, regardless of how good Nylander is.

Edit: can’t read

Where are you getting 35 million? Even if you factor in Tavares staying at 11 which simply won't happen, the most it could be is 46M for the four and the cap is projected to be 88 million. That is 42 million. And like I said, that is not happening, Leafs will have 50+ million for the roster.

Now factor in these contracts the cap went up only 1 million since the day they were signed. These next deals the cap will rise, so each year it gets easier and easier.

This year, the Leafs are spending 57.5% of the cap on 5 players (Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander and Reilly).

If this contract happens, next year, even with the upper limit increasing, they would be spending 61.5% of their cap on those same guys.

They're not winning anything with that sort of cap allocation, and next to no impact ELC players on the horizon (especially on D).

They're not winning anything with that sort of cap allocation.

This is so awesome. 90 Mil for a guy that has been over a PPG once in his career. You'd think they would have figured out that having such atop heavy roster does not work by now.

7 of the 11 million that expires with Tavares deal will be spoken for with the raises for Nylander and Matthews. Most of the rest will go to Marner.

Gotta be one of the funniest statements I've ever read on this site.

You'll have 20m tied up in two top 6ers, no other bonafide top 6ers, no #1D, barely any top 4D, and a completely unproven goalie. And you have what, 45m for 4 top 6 players, 3 top 4D, a #1G, and whatever prospects you bring up and want to sign in the next 3 years? And you're going to...do this through FA?

MMMm, yeah I don't think this is even going to happen but hypothetically if it did I think you'd be even worse off than you are now somehow.

With samsonov coming off the books next season, it shouldn't be too bad
