I was just looking through the numbers of Laviolette's teams.

Justin Williams ppg totals prior to Laviolette were about .51 points per game
His first season under Laviolette - 76 points or .92 points per game.

Rod Brind'Amour's ppg totals the 5 seasons prior to Laviolette were about .5 points per game, including the very season prior of a total of 38 points in 78 games.
His first season under Laviolette, 70 points in 78 games or .90 points per game.

Eric Cole ppg totals prior to Laviolette in his first 3 seasons in the NHL .51, his first full season with Laviolette he had 59 points in 60 games or a .98 ppg games

Craig Smith last season, .66
Wilson .41
Ribeiro’s last season, .59, his last 5 seasons .80
Roy last season .49, his last 5 seasons .68

He made some similar improvements to players games at other stops too, like the Islanders Mark Parrish, Shawn Bates and Mike Pecca.

I mean can he make similar improvement or turnarounds to any of our players like he did Carolina’s or New Yorks?

I know there was some other things that could have also influenced the Carolina turnarounds but most of those guys played as good or better for Laviolette

That is very interesting and I am surprised at how many guys had such an upswing in production. If he can pull that off with some of our players this team could end up being really good.

I really think this is a make it or brake it season for Wilson and that is not saying he won't make it in the NHL and have a long career if he doesn't take off this year. I'm just saying this is very close to his last shot at being a star/top 6 forward.

I think Smith is going to really do well in the new system. Over the last 3 season of watching hm it was easy to see how much stronger he has gotten and how much harder he battles for the puck. Carry those lessons learned from Trotz over to PL's system and he could put up 30+ easily.

While I am happy with the veterans they have brought in and think they will all be playing really hard because of their one year contracts I really hope Forsberg is given a chance on the roster and in the top 6. I really think he is ready to make the jump after watching him at camp.

For David Poile as well

For David Poile as well

On the Forcheck has an article mocking that.

So in a year when David Poile knows the clock is ticking on him to produce a playoff team, he turns to Olli Jokinen. Olli showed up at the presser wearing a sportswear version of a Miami Marlins hat, and with a mullet. Awesome. We then find out shortly afterwards that Mike Fisher had surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles's Tendon right when the UFA period began. REALLY? HE KNEW THIS TEAM HAD NO REAL TOP LINE CENTER BEFORE FISHER HAD SURGERY, AND THIS IS THE BACKUP PLAN?

So in a year when David Poile knows the clock is ticking on him to produce a playoff team, he signs Mike Ribeiro and Derek Roy (much to the delight of the local beat writer) to one-year deals worth less money than Jokinen's deal. Barring any other trades, Ribeiro will be the guy who passes the puck to James Neal, and Roy will slot in nicely on the second line. That's cool, but the entire season is now essentially riding on two guys who both showed up on David Poile's doorstep asking for a spot, and might be gone after this year. So in this super important year, Poile has turned to two players who have never been a top line center in order to get the best out of his new winger, who happened to play next to Evgeni Malkin last year.

Maybe David Poile isn't on the hot seat after all? Crud.

However, I do hope what Trigg pointed out happens here to some degree at least.

Not trying to defend Poile, but he did try to bring in a #1 center. The only problem is every center he went after had different plans. We ended up with the bargain bin guys who could end up being very productive for us, expectantly for the price.

We gave up Hornqvist and Spaling and lost Fisher for probably half the season. We replaced them with Neal, Ribiero, Roy and Jokinen. Even if we just added Neal and Ribiero I think that's a win. Anything we get from Roy and/or Jokinen is a major bonus. I think we're a better team then we were when the season ended.

How can they say Mike Ribeiro wasn't a first line center when he put up 83 points in 07-08?Or in 2012 when he was Washington's leading point producing center?

And who do they think was Buffalo's top line center, when Roy was putting up seasons of 80, 70 and 69 points?

Especially when I've seen nothing from anyone that hasn't said the guy is a top line center. Sure his off the ice issues are always right after that, but whether its our fans, or heck even St. Louis and Chicago fans, everyone has been in agreement that he is a top line guy.

I honestly think you could stick Crosby on this team and suddenly he wouldn't be a top line player anymore for some people out there.

Agree. Unfollowed Dirk's twitter a while back as it seemed everything was complaining about management. Did he also complain about the Ribs and Roy signings at bargain shop prices on 1 year deals?

Used to love his stuff and thought it was the best Preds blog there was. Now I get my Preds news from elsewhere.

I have two more hours at work. I may look at some of the players he had in Philly and try to determine his influence on them as well. Interesting stuff, trigg. Thanks!

edit: I looked at Richards, Carter, Giroux, Hartnell and Timonen. I excluded Pronger because he's a legend so it seemed pointless to see what Lavy did with him, and I excluded JVR since it was his rookie season so there was nothing against which to compare his 2009-2010 numbers. Richards was basically on par with his career PPG before Lavy. Carter went from a career ppg of .70 to .82 during Lavy's first year in Philly. Claude Giroux's numbers dropped off during Lavy's first season, but took a pretty good jump immediately following that season. Hartnell was basically on par. Timonen was basically on par.

Looking at Giroux's spike after being coached by Lavy for one season could come across as promising, but it took a while for JVR to start increasing his PPG percentage. I guess that's a wash when looking at the players from Philly. Honestly, it all seems like a wash aside from Carter.

I didn't look at TOI for the players because I'm lazy

I'm at work cough..

so um, I did glance at Philly, and it looks like Richards and Carter both took the opposite direction under Laviolette..

Really? Maybe I ran the numbers wrong on Carter. My supervisor was talking to me the entire time, so it's possible. I came up with a career ppg of .7 prior to 2009-2010, and then a ppg of .82 during that season. What did you get?

While it is good to look at, i wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into stuff like that. Development comes from the coach AND the player. However, the good news is the majority of players have a upswing in point production. Realistically, we will probably see a player have a drop in point totals, which happens every year, but for the most part a lot of guys will see some of the better years they will have in the NHL. There is no telling though, which is why why we watch the sport

Yes but a lot of the players we are talking about were established guys not just the prospects and they also had up ticks in production under Laviolette.

I'm not saying this is what will happen, just that he has a history of improving player's offensive production.

This is the reason he was hired. Offensive production should increase for most of the players. It will be a major failure if it doesn't happen.

Did I hear right that Trotz had the prospects running a lot of drills with no pucks? Hard to focus on your skills without a puck...

I've always wondered about their practice sessions. I haven't been to a ton of practices and camps, but I've watched at least 3-4 each summer/preseason. I can't remember ever watching shooting drills, ever. If your basketball team has a problem with free throws, you practice free throws, a lot. I just assumed the players were supposed to work on shooting and puck handling drills on their own time during the offseason. I'd love to hear Trotz answer a question related to skill drills during practice.

Maybe that would explain guys like Cullen and Hendricks being shootout specialist before coming to Nashville. Just not enough practice with the puck, just shooting around.
