Good deal for the Flames. Russell's been consistent and the term and dollars make sense. Hoping he continues his solid play going forward

I like the contract, especially the term. If he falls below expectations, then it's two years and not much money for a good bottom 2 defenseman. If he plays like he has this season then we have a top 4 defenceman who can contribute offensively and in 2 years time if we are ready to compete a little more then presently maybe he gets more money and longer term or we can trade him for assets, if (man I hope not), we are still very fresh in this rebuild.

This really is a fantastic deal for us. Russell appears to have found a home in Calgary and has excelled playing under Hartley. It also gives us flexibility to deal a guy like Wideman. If we deal both Wideman and Cammy, that will likely give us 3 more 1st round picks for the 2nd year in a row. Brodie looks like he's becoming a star, Gio is playing the best hockey of his career, Russell has been an absolute beast and playing like a solid #3, then we have Smid who can slot in at 4 with a steady stay at home presence. That leaves us with a solid blueline and available spots for guys like Wotherspoon, Seiloff and Ramage, or possibly Ekblad. Unlike the Oilers, we have a very good basis on our backend to begin our rebuild with.
