Can he play in these playoffs?

I could see Montreal giving him a shot if so, they were very happy with him (rightfully so, he was solid for us). We do have a ton of forwards now, so not sure how he'd fit in. If he plays as well as he did previously, fantastic. If he doesn't, no real risk.

Or back to the Habs to be the next top center :D

He is a Habs legend after all. I just don't think there's room for him anymore. Maybe as a veteran presence next year, but he seems to be better in an offensive role. I could totally see the fit, but I don't follow the Jets that mich. It was a serious proposition, unlike yours.

You watch too much CNN lol

Man seeing you in all the threads. I just need to comment to say you are a gem ;)

The Olympics with 0 NHL players I did not watch. No point in watching it when the best players in the other countries can't attend.

Now I realize Russian Athletes have some in North America however they have quite a lot of talent in the KHL and were able to finally win an Olympics when all the better talent was out.

I won't call it illegitimate Russia won the gold medal.

Just that they didn't face the best competition.

Is he hurt? Because he sure disappeared in the KHL playoffs this year. After going PPG in regular seasons he had 9 points in 24 playoff games.

Kind of like last year in the NHL playoffs.

That would be funny. If you ever told me the Habs could ice all of Perry, E.Staal and Kovalchuk (maybe on the same line too!), I would not have believed you.
But ehhhh it's not 2007 anymore I'd rather play with our young players than bring in yet another vet at the end of his career.

Kovy likely would never goto Toronto. They don’t treat old vets very well. It’s either Boston or Rangers

Considering the running joke for the last 20 years has been Toronto is the place Vet's go to retire, this is a refreshing spin.

If no one wanted him last off-season, why would a team sign him a year later, and after he didn't seem to be a big playoff contributor for Omsk in the playoffs?

Toronto has given Joe Thornton first and second line duties at times this season. Pretty much the same as Marleau when he was here. We have vets that love to come here so I’m not sure why you’d think that.

As long as he is not expecting big money and really is it for a chance to win the Cup, sure why not.

It would actually be really great to have that kind of a guy in the room for Podkolzin. Van can always used another offensive winger, even if he's just a powerplay specialist at this age.

Don't seem him coming to Van though.

The Podkolzin factor actually never crossed my mind. Good point.

Bob Hartley has always been known to speak nicely of his former players, and he gets along really well with Kovalchuk, so this should be taken with a grain of salt. This is just Hartley trying to be nice.

Nothing is gonna come out of this. Kovalchuk is done in the NHL, for good.

When the Kings brought him back in 2017, it was a long shot, but a logical, reasonable gamble. When it didn't work out and he went around from one team to another like a joint at a Snoop Dogg party, I think it became clear he was done.

And contrary to what some people suggest, he wasn't that good with Montreal. He came here motivated on adrenaline and produced 8 points in his first 8 games... before completely disappearing after that. The rest of his time here was just the usual Kovalchuk disappearing act of producing like a bottom 6 players while taking risks like a top 6 players.

Even with an expansion team coming and new job openings being created, this isn't happening.

Okay. We'll let you have the tough conversation and be the one to Kovalchuk that his NHL career is over. Somebody needs to have a talk with him and set him straight.

Kovalchuk is one of my favorite players. The guy was incredibly talented. At this point though, I'm rolling my eyes. He doesn't seem to know what he wants and he's pushing 40. He's not really in a position to bargain. But, it's a guarantee a GM would sign him if he'd take the minimum. I'm guessing Montreal or Florida. That's usually where Russians like to go.
