They can't veto a return, As long as it's a sign and trade between the Devils and say the Florida Panthers the league would accept it. It's only if he came into the NHL and then decided to sign say with Detroit then he would need league approval.

Great, so the Devils will benefit again from the shady termination of the original illegal contract, for which they got cap relief to the tune of $6.67MM AAV until 2025. Ah, Bettman's corrupt NHL. Lou must've left copies of the negatives in the desk for Ray.

Kovalchuk's (likely) options:

-come back this year one a multiyear contract worth around 6 mil per AAV

-come back next year on a one-year 6 mil contract.

Devils options:

-trade Kovalchuk - signed to a contract that can be bought out/bargained - for what he's worth

-keep Kovalchuk - possibly trade him at the deadline for a better haul if he proves he can play

-let Kovalchuk weigh the pros and cons of entering the NHL as a 35+ player and get nothing for him if he decides to stay in Russia

Devils have more play in this negotiation than people give them credit for.

I like it!

Don't pretend that the compliance buyouts were created without pressure from owners like Snider. Who benefited most from them? Hmmm

The original illegal contract was never accepted by the NHL and the Devils were fined $3 million (and a 1st which they kind of got back but not really) for trying to pass it anyway. They did nothing illegal or shady to break Kovy's actual contract. The illegal contract was just the final nail in the coffin for the many other front loaded contracts that came before that one.

Devils might be interesting again with Kovalchuk.

Good timing too. If they won the lottery, which they won't, but let's say they did:

Hall-Patrick-Kovalchuk

Get some other scorers and some better d-men, and that's a playoff bound team.

You were saying?

Devils GM Ray Shero says he has confirmed with agent Jay Grossman that Ilya Kovalchuk definitely wants to return to the NHL next season

Shero says Grossman free to speak to other teams about a potential deal. Devils would do a sign and trade. But deal has to make sense for NJ

Kovalchuk can't officially sign an NHL contract until July 1. So lots of time for all this to play out. But the Kovalchuk sweepstakes are on
