Russian followers seem a little surprised he was drafted, apparently the MHL isn't really considered a high priority league and players are pretty rarely drafted out of it, but again, it's a sixth round pick and maybe it will work out.

Just for now Volkov isn't a clear starter in MHL (not to mention that .902 is pretty low for MHL) and we have been used to that the top talents are. Also at the moment he is like a 5-th or 6-th goalie in the WJC candidate list, so that also makes this pick not exactly obvious.

Rinne was a backup goalie not getting any playing time when we drafted him.

Was the photo of him taken with a 1971 Polaroid?

This pick screams "I need to justify that 5000 dollar expense report for St. Petersburg"

I googled him and got a former KGB agent and a Russian pole vaulter. I then added hockey to the search and got a player the Leafs drafted in 2003, are we sure this guy even exists?

Sorry for the huge bump, but K. Volkov has been added to Team Russia roster for the upcoming CHL Canada Russia Series (as well as Yakov Trenin).

I think he has a chance to play one or two games, we'll see. It will be good for you to have a look at him.
He does exist!!!! It's like finding Bigfoot there was a sketchy photo and a few hair samples but yes he is not a ex-KGB agent!!

It's ironic that he was born in 1997 because that's about a decade after when it looks like the picture of him was taken.

Put up some huge numbers over there in Russia playing in the MHL:

36GP, 1.74 GAA, .934 Sv%
1 playoff GP, 2.01 GAA, .941 Sv%

Hopefully, he gets a chance somewhere in the KHL next year. Although, he's probably too young at least for a starter job. But might be a decent late goalie pick.

wonder if they will sign him and bring him over as Maz's backup next year?
He will have just turned 20 at that point, so he could possibly use some more seasoning first.

(He says hypocritically while being an advocate for Saros to play in the NHL at 21)

Would be at least a little surprising. The MHL is a junior league that's a sizable jump below even Canadian junior hockey. I think the best bet would be backing up in the KHL for a couple of years before even thinking about coming this way.
