Let’s agree to disagree. Allen is not helping any dmen develop. Let’s be serious here.

Obviously a veteran goalie will help D develop. Let's be serious here ;) Good communication and tips on how to play different scenarios. A good G will definitely help all the young players... they are crazy but they are also the ones that understand the game the best... 'cause they have to stand there and watch it most of the time.

Haha, yeah. Allen, the goalie who could never lockdown a starters job is going to be instrumental in developing our young dmen. You nailed it!!!

so who do you suggest?
If he fine with Allen on one year deals. I wouldn’t be committing any multi year deals to him. If he doesn’t sign there are options every year for decent backups. It’s not a difficult roll to fill and the impact it will have on younger dmen is being completely overstated. It’s almost zero.

Why wouldn't Allen be able to help? He has all kinds of experience and seems to be a very positive person and a good communicator. His lack of talent (and size) makes his success' even more commendable.

Just curious, have you ever played on a hockey team in an organized league?

Clearly the guy doesn't value confidence at all in the development of a player. Everyone knows confidence is harder to get as a young d man if any mistake you make, ends up in the back of your net and costs your team games.

If you don't think that confidence matters in the development of young defencemen then yes, let's agree to disagree. I do not think it is good for defencemen to play in front of trash AHL goaltending and have every mistake end up as a goal against.

I like Allen and he could fill a gap but If guy like Campbell are getting 5M$ for a cap strap « contender » what is Allen Worth in term of is next contract and what could he be worth a the TDL with 50% retain, there will be a min of 2-3 playoff team where Allen would be a clear upgrade and at 1.45M$ he will be able to fit on almost every team so he could be a popular option. Getting a good guy for the room and kid is pretty easy getting a good goalie is a lot harder but we aren’t contending in the next 2 years, the pick or asset we are getting might end up being a core player which Allen will never be.

You might find it harder than you think to find a veteran goalie with Allen's ability who is accepting of the fact that they will be relegated to back-up as soon as a young goalie establishes themself.

Someone like Campbell etc. aren't going to sign for reasonable money/term with the expectation they'll be relegated to back-up duties.

Allen fits a lot of the things we need out of a transitional goalie and unless Hughes gets an offer that is a no-brainer (like someone trading a '23 1st for Allen) he can operate this way.

I don't think an extension at relatively short term and modest improvement in salary is going to be a barrier to us moving Allen if we need to.

To a contender that is already in cap trouble for next year having term is a issues, and even if it is short term it won’t be cheap Allen is critically underpaid because he sign to be Price backup but he is a top 30 goalie in The NHL and probably top 10 bang for $ in the NHL.
Finding someone with Allen ability will be hard almost impossible especially on the same budget but fining someone to help the kids and be a good locker room guy isn’t as complicated…

We saw first hand last year the impact that poor goaltending can have on the morale of the team. On many occasions we'd go down by two early and the game was over. The other team simply tightened the screws defensively and we lacked the will to compete and the belief that we could come back. At this stage in the rebuild we certainly don't need elite goaltending that will steal us games, but we need competent goaltending that can keep us in games and thus give our young players meaningful minutes on the ice. Playing garbage time while losing 5-0 is not ideal for development.
