Chico is good people. If you've ever met him in person, he's just a really nice guy and he genuinely loves to talk hockey. He's also very honest and you tend to get his unfiltered opinion when you speak with him one on one vs. what he says in the booth. The only time he's tough to take is when the team is playing like ****, but that's because he's too positive for his own good.

I don't know, if you've been watching the team long enough, I'm not sure how you won't miss him. He's been the longest tenured color guy we've ever had. 17 years now and I always appreciated that he was kind of homerish, but not way over the top.

Dano taking over is cool though. Keep it in the family.

I will miss Chico a lot when he retires. Cannot care less about his gaffes - he is entertaining and an all around good guy. Also never have understood the homer criticisms as that is pretty much what I want from our color guy. There is enough bias against the Devils nearly everywhere else in the media and on the internet - do not want out own guys being too neutral. It is overblown criticism anyway because there are plenty of times he will call out the team or support a proper call or missed call against us.

That said, I think Dano (with some proper seasoning) will be a great replacement. Curious who they have in mind to replace Dano if he indeed succeeds Chico.

The only thing I didn't like is he talked too long during play. He's got get his comments in quickly and turn it back over to Steve before he's caught rambling for 30 seconds.

You mean Chico never did that?

I have ZERO problem with Dano's delivery and commentating.

Listening to him basically do in-game analysis on certain plays in a serious manner is a breath of fresh air, IMO.

With all due respect to Chico who always brought that Comic Relief aspect, well....I don't watch Devils games to listen to Commentators tell stupid jokes or going off on unrelated tangents. If I wanted to see Comic Relief, I'd watch Pete coaching. :help:

Yes probably the nicest guy I've ever met. It's too bad that I might never get to talk to him again.

I'm gonna miss Chico. He rambles and isn't the best analysis wise, but he's enjoyable to listen to. Seems like a great guy.

I am going to miss Chico a ton. I think he is hilarious, especially when he messes up (Stephan Gionta might as well be named Brian) and has anecdotes about players from many eras and esoterica about all sorts of folks around the game. It's folksy, sure, but there is real insight in there as well.

And he has always been great with my kids, taking pictures and talking them up, whenever he sees them in the Fire Lounge. (To be fair, Cangy is also really nice.)

I think it unfair to judge Kenny on two periods, but he has mumble mouth and I honestly cannot make out a sizable chunk of what he is saying. From both an experience and personality standpoint this is a step backwards.

But folks get old and life goes on.

Oh really now?

I can understand him CLEARLY when he speaks. Although I do agree that he sounds like he's talking with Cotton in his mouth but hey....that's how he sounds, so what can you do? :dunno:

Chico is retiring. He hasn't said it officially but it has been rumored since the start of the season that his will be his last season doing color commentary.

The logical replacement has been Ken Daneyko who's slowly worked into the broadcast for years now and is also doing Hockey Night Live.

His 2nd period call are simply an audition to see if he can do it and the chemistry with Steve. I like Ken more doing color than the between periods and ice level reports. He does a more technical analysis than story-time.

In addition, he seems more relaxed being off camera and just lending his voice and insight. Yes he has to work to enunciate and has a slow pace to his delivery but he is usually dead on in what he's saying. Chico stumbles and falters a lot too so this is not a change really on the delivery style.

Former Devil doing color. It's what we're used to and I welcome him for at least next season to see how he does after settling into the role. He's been a little nervous doing the 2nd period calls knowing this is his chance to land the job imo and just needs a little time to get comfy.

I know most don't want Chico to go but with the departure of Doc, I think part of the appeal is gone for Chico working the games and traveling so much. He was one of Doc's biggest fans and honestly Doc knew how to utilize Chico better than Steve does.

Now get Matt Loughlin back to do Deb's job with interviews and we'd be set.

Matt is doing a fine job on the radio. I want Deb gone too but not at Matt's expense.

I agree with you on Chico. Doc knew exactly how to use him. Steve doesn't really know how and Chico just starts to ramble.

I love Chico, even all his inane comments and borderline ridiculous assessments sometimes. If his retirement is true, he will definitely be sorely missed. As stated, he's also a fantastic guy to talk to if you happen to approach him. I understand his leaving the air, he's done it for a very long time and I'm sure he'd like a schedule that doesn't include 82+ games and flying around North America (seemed to be Doc's logic, too). However, I think he's a fantastic personality in whole and I would hope that the Devils utilize that in other ways, because I think he would be fantastic on a community outreach level where he doesn't have to travel at all.

As for Dano, I don't think that his delivery is ever going to improve much more than it already has with his on-camera stuff. You have to remember that this gentleman took some punishment throughout his career and also battled alcoholism which has some deteriorative effects on the brain as well. I'm not saying he's bad or horrible, but I think that his impediments are ones that are a byproduct of his brain less than they are his skill. He's more than proven to be an incredibly insightful person and one who is pretty well articulated otherwise. His delivery is just, not where it "should" be for a color commentary position because he isn't able to be quick and it causes him to misspeak or sort of bumble his words at times.

On the other hand, in the long run, I think Marty would probably be an excellent color guy. His vision is a big reason he was so successful in the league and you can almost guarantee with some grooming he could provide some pretty awesome insight in the nuances of the game. BUT, I don't think I could listen to his voice that much, not going to lie.

I think one guy who would EXCEL at doing commentary :

Oh please oh please oh please replace Dano during the intermission reports!!!!!

If Chico does indeed retire, we need to put together a best of video compilation in the chicoism's thread. Especially any banter between him and Doc

The minute Chico made the exact same remark that Doc did (just after he left) about turning 65 earlier this year, it seemed obvious he was heading out the door.

He would get fired after 3 games for calling out the team and asking players why they screwed up during the 1st intermission interview instead of highlighting their goal:laugh:

I'll miss Chico too, but its time. He's slowing down. Watch some 2000 highlights and you can hear the big difference between him then and now. But hey, he had a great run and we will all miss Chico Eats.

The segment can be called "the blame and shame game" with Bobby Holik

Or "Gettin Sobby with Bobby".

Or simply "What the Hell is with the Devils"

i don't think Dano was that bad considering it was his 2nd time in the booth. Give it time...i'm sure he'll improve. I know Cangy has improved since his initial calls. I remember he use to always say "off the face" which would annoy the living **** out of me.

as for chico...i think it's time for retirement. steve has no idea how to handle him when he goes off the rails. i think i only liked them together in 2012. they lack chemistry.....

chico sounds more burnt out the last two years then anything. it's pretty obvious how much he misses working with doc.

get deb off tv and replace her with sherry ross, and bring back randy velischek so i never have to hear matty ice call a game on the radio ever again.

confused him with john hennessey for a moment (friday night, weed etc etc)

i remember back when hennessey/velischek got the axe there was rumors of some kind of falling out involving one of them and lou so i doubt we will see either of those two again. anyone know where mike miller is these days?

Really?

BTW, I do agree that Chico seems burnt out and why shouldn't he be? He just doesn't seem to have the same chemistry and dynamic that he had with Doc.

That said, I believe in Dano and think he'll do just fine. And I feel he may have a bit more chemistry with Steve, If I may dare to say.

lol dude i don't really give a damn about the eye candy factor, sherry seems like a legit fan and is sassy as hell she'd be funny on TV. deb has been doing interviews and all that **** for YEARS and still sounds like a second year broadcast major from a state school, the intermissions are sometimes painful to watch.
