Speaking of Alex Grenier, some of you think he will be the next call up, how is he doing with Utica?

According to anyone who watched him play, he won't be called up any time soon because his play doesn't merit it.

Vancouver Province article by Jim Jamieson on Kellan Lain and his family.

Chris Tanev V2.0 (Forward Edition)?

Like Chris Tanev he was passed over in minor hockey because he was too small then he had a growth spurt. And like Tanev he played Tier II junior and went the NCAA route.

Unlike Tanev he had to overcome a serious injury - a skate cut to the wrist that could have ended his hockey career.

According to his father Kellan never had a hockey fight until this season in Utica.

It’s probably hard to believe that Kellan — now 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds — was the smallest player on his minor hockey teams growing up, but Jim recalls his son being 5-foot-7 and 125 pounds when he was 15. His first hockey fight was this year with Utica, N.Y., in the American Hockey League.

Kellan was cut from his Greater Toronto Bantam team and from his second year Midget team. He then played a year of high school hockey.

“Even when he was a kid and he was small and getting pounded on by other players, I just said, bide your time, you’re going to be the big guy one day. My wife is 5-foot-11, our daughter is 6-foot-1, our other son is 6-foot-4, my dad was 6-4, so there’s lots of height there,†said Jim.

But even after he’d started to grow, Kellan faced another daunting hurdle — overcoming a serious injury when a goaltender’s skate slashed deeply into his left wrist during an Ontario junior league game late in the 2008-09 season.
...
Kellan had a severed Ulnar artery, but worse, the skate blade had also sliced through his Ulnar nerve and several tendons.

The surgeon said it would take 12 months, but he was back playing nine months later. He was scheduled to begin a scholarship at Lake Superior State the next fall, but they agreed to defer it a year.

Anyways, about Lain..

Well, if I were to say one thing about Lain for that matter would be that the Canucks should IMMEDIATELY follow the Yankees long standing policy when it comes to personal grooming.

re: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/164919-steinbrenners-facial-hair-policy-those-famous-staches

The rule was that no male player, coach, or executive may wear any facial hair except for a mustache. They could also grow sideburns or mutton chops. The players hair was not allowed to be worn below the collar.

A few people were curious, in the Calgary game, why Calgary put Westgarth at centre, when Blair Jones was out there, and is a natural centre.

Go back a few months, and it might be clear why Jones didn't want to face off against Lain, when the intent was to fight.

Look at them sideburns! He looks like a girl. Now, Henrik Sedin, there's a haircut you could set your watch to.

That was great. If only Lain was on the team a few years back to fight the car that took out Sauve.

How many World Championships have the Yankees have won?

Exactly.

re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logos_and_uniforms_of_the_New_York_Yankees

Personal appearance

Under George Steinbrenner, long hair and facial hair below the lip were prohibited;[14] the practice has been continued under Hal Steinbrenner since control of the Yankees was transferred to him after the 2008 season. Players who do not fit these criteria must shave the excess hair.[/B] In the past, visible tattoos were also prohibited[citation needed] and players wore navy blue arm bands to cover them[citation needed], although this practice has since been ceased.

Although this is a policy that all baseball teams once had, the Yankees are currently the only team with such a policy (though former Chicago White Sox general manager Ken Williams was known for asking players to cut their hair, the club does not now nor during his time as GM have a policy banning long hair) and have gotten notoriety enforcing it. Many players, most notably Reggie Jackson, Roger Clemens, Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield, Johnny Damon, and Randy Johnson either had long hair, significant facial hair, or both before playing for the Yankees, but were clean-cut by the time they had their press conferences unveiling them as members of the Yankees.

Here's an example:

Now if we are actually going to talk about "dumb" ideas, the Canucks tried to copy the "12th Man" idea from NFL football teams like the Seahawks (which is wildly successful) with their ill-fated "7th man" variation:

Seriously, if the Canucks were going to, uh, copy another idea from a successful sports franchise, why not this one?

It's one that's literally fubar proof.

The Canucks could be the NHL's version of the Yankees with a proper dress protocol.

How good would that be?

As Christian Bale once famously stated, “Are you professional or not?!?!”

What the **** are you talking about?

:laugh::shakehead:

Because, you know, the Yankees success is because of their strict dress code as opposed to, you know, spending a bajillion dollars a year on salaries?

And if you don't count the two second game he played in, he is at a 41 goal per season pace!!!:D
