As some of us posted prior to the deal, Lekhonen’s game was much more that stat gazing and because of that he’d never get equivalent value in a return…. which is what has happened

He’s a player that can be used in all situations, moved up and down a lineup while giving 100% on every shift.

HuGo got fleeced on both Lekhonen & Toffoli deals

I was among the biggest Lehkonen boosters on here and loved Toffoli, but come on now. Montreal had less than ZERO cap space to work with at the time and needed to move guys out. Lehkonen would be/will be 30 by the time Montreal can even start thinking about trying to make the playoffs and Toffoli would be/will be 34. The returns for both players was good.

I don't think people get how young Barron is for a D-man or have paid much attention to other D from his draft class. Faber has been awesome and Sanderson looks good. Guhle has been able to tread water in really tough minutes. Nikishin looks like he could be really good when he comes over. The rest? Drysdale has looked pretty bad after his injury. Schneider has a lot of work to do. Mukhamadullin has been decent in the AHL, but still hasn't shown anything in the NHL. Wallinder and Grans have shown less (although I like Wallinder). Lohrei is worse defensively than Barron, but gets to be on a better team.

The impatience here mid-rebuild is honestly wild. There's still a lot he has to work on, but he's a young 22.

The thing is, there is no room for patience when the guy gets waived if he keeps this up.

If a player gets waived and picked up by another team, what good is patience going to do for us when he's not part of the organization anymore?

None of Struble, Harris, Xhekaj or Kovacevic have consistently looked better when playing the minutes Barron did. If you choose to waive him by setting the standard higher for him than for other guys, then you're being impatient.

And Montreal's carried 3 goalies all season to avoid losing Primeau, who likely tops out as a platoon goalie or backup, on waivers, you honestly think they'll look at RD with Barron's tools and waive him?

Unless he comes to camp next year like a different player, he's getting waived. I loved the trade at the time but it didn't work out at all.

He hasnt progressed at all. Well, actually he did last year but to me it seems like hes regressed big time this year.

I would also add that Mailloux has been better defensively than Barron.
Maillouxs also been pretty bad defensively, another one trending towards bust status IMO. At some point, Houle will have to show results. Has he developped a single player? Roy, Guhle just breezed-by Laval and never really seen growth.

I guess his success stories are RHP and Ylonen.

Toffoli wasn’t a fleece. It was clearing cap for a 1st round pick with hope he wouldn’t fall off.

Lehk was simply bad scouting. Bad management.
We forced ourselves to clear cap to save guys like Pitlik while letting poels go.

A lot of bad moves. But Barron was Hughes not doing his job ( or he’s a bad evaluator)
I get he’s a former 1st round pick, but my brother please looks at what you trade for. This guy has no place on a. Cup contending team

Barron’s issue has nothing to do with injury, age, or lack of experience…. he’s scared of his own shadow, which will continue to limit his progression.

Heineman is a dime a dozen journeyman player in org #3 already

If the Habs historically made decisions of what players looked like in their early 20s, they would have traded Pacioretty for 3rd round pick and never kept half of their good picks over the last 20 years.

And your entirely misremembering two years ago if you think Pitlick had anything to do with the situation. Montreal had to get clarification on Price and pull off the Petry trade before they could pull the Monahan deal off, you think they thought they had an extra 4-5 mil to sign Lehkonen?

That is a lack of experience thing.

Yep. He hasnt been good, and hes been worse offensively. Another stagnating prospect.
"Another", who are the others, outside of 7th round pick Primeau, and those who had tons of injuries?

Maillouxs also been pretty bad defensively, another one trending towards bust status IMO.
I mean sure, defensively there's tons of work to do. But offensively, Mailloux is 6th in points for dmen in the AHL, as a rookie. We're talking about a 20 years old who only played 75 games in the OHL + 21 playoff games (where he was more than PPG).

He was drafted 31st because he's always been a project (and the legal issues), but he's very far from a bust at this point.

That is a lack of experience thing.
It's a personality thing. It can improve, but it's not going to change radically.

Struble and Xhekaj are waivers exempt which is a massive difference when it comes to patience. Kovacevic isn't part of the "young core" so that doesn't matter. I agree about Harris, I've always said he's in the same boat.

I do think that lack of experience is hurting Barron a lot, but this waiver situation complicates things a lot unless they decide to do what they did with Primeau this year.

Hughes should’ve scouted before this trade. He had no reason to rush this move. Lehk was an RFA.
Ridiculous. Barron was 20 at the time of the trade. No one knew how he'd develop over the following 3-5 years.

We still dont' know how he'll be at 25. It's not looking great, but plenty of guys figure it out a bit late.

Shea Theodore was given up for nothing because the Ducks gave up on a gifted offensive minded dman that had yet to put it together in his D4 season in favor of protecting a bunch of other dmen... Only one of which has been remotely close to as good as Theodore has been since then.

At D5, he turned a corner, and now at 28yrs old he's considered a quality top pairing, cup winning dman.

Bad evaluations abound around the league, getting a talent like Barron & a 2nd for an RFA winger we had no cap room to extend, is not that...

Will be interesting to see how well your evaluation holds as Barron hits his mid 20s... If Crosby's evaluation is better than yours, they'll be some crow to eat

All that hype for '22 trade deadline not much came of it. The first picks ended up Mesar and 31st overall. Prospects Barron, Heineman not really worked out.

Sorry but I watch all Laval games and his D game has vastly improved.

Trending towards bust territory???!!! Do you watch Laval games? He’s got some of the best stats as a rookie in the league! Definitely not bust territory. There’s no way you’re actually watching the games. The guy was a frickin all star!

Mailloux is busting after 52 AHL games!? Leading rookie D in points!? My goodness lol.

As you say the kid is 22...............................can skate, and move the puck and score goals. He has done this in the NHL already.
Guys are way too impatient when it comes to our rebuild......it is still a good trade for us. A work in progress............
People forget that Lekky had brutal numbers with us, and couldn't socre in a soccer net for almost two years...................yes he scored a huge OT goal for us but glad we dealt him before we paid him 4-5M................................Also very glad he got a Cup and got paid.

Barron has a tough lineup to crack with all of our youth coming too...............but he is still a good young Dman who does many things well.

To be fair his defensive game is still weak, but even if he's crap defensively those offensive numbers speak for themselves. He's at worst going to be a PP/third pairing specialist in the NHL. Upside is a John Carlson type.
He's an offensive D that has had very little development time. I think he is doing just fine.

I'd say there is far less patience when you're drafting 8+ players per draft 4 years in a row. That's the other side of the medal.

12 picks coming up, some prospects will go off the board earlier than expected.

Montreal's drafted 8+ players for 6 straight drafts already. I'm not sure why they'd be less patient with a Barron than they would pretty much any player they've drafted over that span of time.
