I think it was a huge eff you to the organization.

"The rivalry was just so great, I couldn't imagine putting on another jersey"..C'mon... I have a hard time believe his agent didn't coach him to say that. Johnny Damon had no problem playing for the Yankees...Dougie Gilmour had no qualms putting on a habs jersey....being traded is part of the game and living in Toronto is pretty sweet. It really has everything as far as I'm concerned. Also, it's the Leafs! As much as I am not a fan you have to admit they play on the biggest hockey stage and have one of the biggest fanbases in sports.

Conversely, it's the leafs...I think it showed just how dysfundtional the organization really is when above-average 4th defenceman are refusing to report. The team blows...period. 1 playoff appearance in 9 years and the biggest meltdown in playoff history. Even with that record, they refuse to blow it up and think Tyler Bozak, Jonathan Bernier and Matt Frattin will lead them to the promise land...whatever. There's only so many coaches in the caroussel. To top it off Bell and Rogers can't agree on what colour to paint the executive suite bathrooms and Tim Leiweke wants nothing to do with it. Don Cherry thinks players don't want to go there because there aren't enough OHL guys...he's right about the first part.

Then he signs with the Buffalo Sabres....A team that has taken active steps to lose and finish last.

Eff you.

FWIW, didn't gorges say he vetoed because he needed time to think it through?

He never explicitly said he would never play for TO. I think the media ran with the story that he needed time to think of any other sweater but the habs.

As I remember it he was taken by surprise because he didn't ask for a trade, that's when it was reported someone declined a trade to the leafs. it was revealed it was Gorges. He spoke with Shanahan, He was asked to expand his list of teams, he went to Buffalo.

Before he spoke with Shanahan,my bet is he spoke with his agent who coached him on what to say so he can decline 'gracefully' and that's when the rivarly story was concocted.

I have nothing against Gorges. In fact I never have a problem when a player blocks a trade. If a player has a no trade clause in his contract then by all means they have the right to reject a trade to whatever teams are on their list. Some players earn their NTC and some are just given it. Gorges earned his.

I think that the poll should really be three options.

Gilbert and 2nd
Franson
Gorges

When trade trade happened I was talking to my brother. Salary wise the Gorges for a second rounder actually worked out to;

Gorges for 2nd rounder, Gilbert, Sekac and Malholtra

The difference in salary between Gorges and Gilbert is Sekac and Malholtra and you can throw a second rounder in there for goo measure.

Yes I do know that Sekac and Malholtra have nothing to do with that trade but dollar for dollar wise it works out to very close to the same.

Franson is difficult to evaluate because I think he has more to often than what's been demonstrated on a god awful Leafs team. Carlyle cannot coach defense to save his life, whereas I think Franson could compliment Emelin better than Gilbert has. Conversely, it would be a better fit for Markov if we opted to keep both their minutes down. Gilbert hasn't been horrible, just extremely inconsistent and nowhere near the offensive defenseman promised when we signed him.

It essentially comes down to a low-end jack of all verse a specialist. The pick is also debatable because we could opt to walk away from Franson and have even more cap space for this coming off season. Overall, I think Franson just narrows out over Gilbert, but I'll readily admit I was completely against trading for him at the time.

Because his decision wasn't based on what's best for the Habs roster but more what's best for himself and his family. It's Bergevin's job to find the best player to add onto the roster.

You do know players sign NTC's and usually take discounts to get them for a reason, right? I love what Bergy is doing for our team but making it public that he had a trade lined up with a player who had a NTC without even asking the player before hand was a classless move on his part. That should have been left behind closed doors.

Player vs. player, Franson is probably better, though I think his highers are higher than Gilbert's and his lows are lower. If that makes any sense.

That said, the comparison is really Gilbert at 2.8m for 2 years with Buffalo's 2nd vs. Franson at 3.3m for 1 year with no 2nd. I'll take the former.

Love Gorges and how he trolled the Leafs in the process...

But you have to go with the better, younger player, despite the second round pick.

Franson.

I don't blame Georges for anything. He had the clause. He had that right. He didn't want to be traded and wasn't expecting it.

I think I'd prefer Franson right now. We got Gilbert. Then Gonchar... then Allen... It's not all bad when you realise the free cap space we're going to get. Still...

Either way, I don't blame Georges. If anything Laffs could have used him and they would have had a better defense. I like seeing Toronto lose.

I rather have Gilbert+2nd than Franson. He's worse/similar defensively and the Leafs PP is structured significantly better than Habs so I doubt his points translate even if he's better than Gilbert. Furthermore, Leafs are more run and gun so the points are inflated in that sense too.

Franson over Gilbert for me, but I don't think the Sabres will be that good next year and that 2nd rounder might be the better option. We will have Buffalo's 2nd and cap space since Gilbert will be gone

Not BUF's 2nd, MIN's 2nd in 2016...

Franson is about as mobile as Gonchar is right now, with a better shot and worse hockey sense. The problem with complementing Emelin is it all depends which Emelin shows up. When he's on the game it doesn't matter much. When he isn't, not even Subban (or Markov) can make him look good as we've seen this year.

Yea he did. I was listening to Gorges in an interview after it went down and he said he grew to hate the Leafs because of the rivalry so he couldn't possibly see himself playing for them.

1. You don't approach a player to waive his NTC unless you think you have a deal lined up. Otherwise that would be stupid. Why ask him to waive to go to the Leafs only to find out that the Leafs have no interest in acquiring him?

2. Bergy certainly didn't leak any info about the trade to the Leafs. That came either from Gorges (and his agent) or the Leafs side of things.

Eff you.

There was an article in the Globe and Mail about the non-trade a few weeks back. The chronology laid out was that Gorges turned to his friend and neighbour Franson to get advice on playing in Toronto (before of course anyone knew that it was Franson that was coming back in the trade) . After that discussion Gorges nixed the deal and wouldn't budge.

The eff you comes from Franson and it's towards the Leafs.
