Love to hear a justification for that. If he was better defensively he wouldn't have to block so many shots.

Blocking shots is strong defence. Not everybody can be a puck possession player, which by its very nature is an offensive stat. You need players who know how to stop the puck from going in the net, and for years Gorges has been among the best in the entire NHL at this. Taking away shots on goal is an extremely valuable skillset.

I think Gilbert will be traded early on in the season or maybe before the season. Which teams would be a good fit?

He's not getting traded. Nobody will actually want him, and he's more useful to us as a 6/7 dman than the conditional 5th he would bring back in a trade. Use him for depth this season and let the Oilers and Panthers of the league fight for his services in free agency.

Gorges is not good defensively. There's a reason he turned into crap when being removed from Markov/Subban's hip. He doesn't play the game smart or well. He just plays simple. He's not good defensively and not bad. If he had a good stick and could get the puck out of his own zone maybe he'd be good defensively. His stick is quite poor and all he has is shotblocking.

If you look at the numbers over his career, its a fair argument that Gorges tended to supress the amounts of shots against his net while playing hard minutes, with the a significant part of that being the number of shots he successfully blocked. Similarly he had a strong track record of success as a penalty killer by any metric. You can't say the same thing about Emelin.

Now, its reasonable to say that Gorges was heading into a predictable decline and the Habs were right to get rid of his contract. But if we're talking about how they played in a Habs uniform, Gorges was the superior option to Emelin and Gilbert due to his value as a defensive specialist who could play significant minutes in a supporting role.

Not true at all. He simply lost a step he couldn't afford to lose
