Hextall already said they are keeping him. I like your thought process here though because if he plays horribly in 2017-2018 they can buy him out next summer and it won't hurt them all that much with cap implications. For all we know that could be their plan.

They will have plenty of cap space so I don't see a buyout happening.

Read and Filppula come off the cap in 2018.

great trade. Let's the young players move up and better role players on the team with kick ass draft picks.

Everything i know about this guy is from watching him during last year's playoffs and I absolutely loved how he played.

If he plays anything like that, i think we got an excellent player

if they had intentions of buying out Lehtera they would not of done this trade. I still think another move is coming to make room for Laughton.

+2

Why protect him and then add another body to block his opportunity to get into the lineup

Lehtera is why we got a 2nd 1st rd pick instead of a 2nd or 3rd rd pick.
Which is why you save that cap room, taking on other people's mistakes can garner extra picks.
And the cost isn't that great, figure as a FA Lehtera would probably garner a 2yr/$4M deal, so we're overpaying by $2.5M a year for two years.

I say give him a chance. He seems like he's taking training seriously for the first time ever, so let's see what he can do before we all hate him.

Im willing to give him a chance but I have a bad feeling he is our next Bellemare (worthless player that plays too much because he tries hard)

Hopefully they move Read now. We added another bottom 6 guy to an already crowded group.

Lehtera is a big upgrade to Bellemare. He has 34 points in 234 career games to Lehtera's 100 points in 218 games.

Man, I was just hoping to have 12 forwards that could skate and provide offense, but Hextall had to go mess it up.

In which world Lehtera does not provide offense? He provides offense that is definitely good enough for bottom 6, and eventually could bounce back to his form from at least 15-16 season.

That's absolutely not Lehtera. He's smart two way forward, who reads the game well, solid playmaker, and is able to provide 20-30 pts per season.

Hell Vandevelde scored 15 pts last year and we crucified him. 22 pts isn't that much more.

So we got two 1st round picks and a player for Brayden Schenn. I am not surprised the player is overpaid and not all that good... But he cannot be worse than some of the guys we had on the bottom 6 last year.

That was in 64 games and he had a horrible year. The two years before that he had 44 and 34 points. I expect him to play primarily on the 4th line for the Flyers with maybe some 3rd line time depending on injuries and giving them a 25 point option for the bottom 6. I dislike the trade and think Lehtera's contract is gross but people are selling him a little bit short as he isn't a bad hockey player and is certainly not another Bellemare Vandevelde.

This season: 22 pts in only 64 games. 4 pts in 8 play-off games.

34 & 44 in previous seasons, and that's only 2 and 3 years ago. He's only 29.

Yep, he's an upgrade to the fourth line in terms of skill and production. He is also a much better face off guy than Bellemare was.

the PK should be better alone with the loss of VdV and Bellemare. Lehtera isnt an elite PKer but he is an upgrade over those 2 players.
Yeah the contract sucks, but the Flyers will have better players like Lehtera on the PK next year.

Some takes out of St Louis

http://bleedinblue.com/2017/05/14/st-louis-blues-final-grades-jori-lehtera/

They see him as an overpaid 3rd line center, not an awful player, just one who hasn't lived up to expectations and his salary.

The ankle surgery hindered his 2015-16 season and he was dinged up a lot last season, an aging player who may be realizing that extending his career is going to require working harder than he has in the past on his off season conditioning.

The last two seasons, despite him being in decline, he's been a solid playoff performer:

28g 4-9 13 +5 CFrel 1.5

So there's some upside there, it's not unreasonable that he bounces back to a 30 point ES scorer in limited PT with decent wings.

He played 12-15 minutes a night for a playoff team, and had a good playoff, so he's not chopped liver.

Willing to watch with an open mind instead of hating him from the start.

I don't give a **** about his cap hit since it isn't stopping us from doing anything and isn't causing any issues.
