According to Waddell, the Canes and Jordan Staal are in the process of talking about an extension at the moment. I will personally speculate that a 3 year term isn't out of the realm of possibility, though these details weren't mentioned. Staal's defensive game is as excellent as it has ever been and is aging gracefully, so having him around and continuing to captain the team for the next few years makes sense.

I’m not sure exactly what to think about this.

If Carolina uses him properly in the bottom6 while limiting his offensive role then great.
If not then not so great and he becomes a bit of a negative for on ice product

He just doesn’t have the offense anymore and should be used purely in defensive role

That's what Brindy has done, basically. Staal mostly plays lots of 5-on-5 defensive minutes and PK time.

I know that’s how it often goes but at times I think they would like to push him too many offensive chances.

If he’s a pure defensive bottom6 C this is most likely a good to great end result

I think he has a certain power forward element to his game which makes it tempting to plug him into a scoring line. I can see Svech - Staal - Jarvis for example, where Staal is the defensive matchup against the opposing C and also a massive body to contend with in the dirty areas.

Problem is, if you put him in that role he’s not great and it has downstream impacts on bottom-6 chemistry. It’s the sort of thing you maybe try on the road when the other team is killing you in the matchup game.

Who is gonna be on Jordan Staal’s left wing this season?

Jesper Fast will most likely be on Staal‘s right wing.

If Kotkaniemi falters as a center it might not be a bad idea to put him at 3LW with Staal and Fast.

Stastny would probably be better at 2C between Turbo and Necas.

The 4th could go a bunch of different ways with Stepan Drury Kase or even Ryan Suzuki or Martinook.
Seeing that Kotkaniemi has tried the LW thing and it didn’t work, Kotkaniemi is our center for a while.

Ryan Suzuki? Tell me you don’t know anything about the canes without telling me you don’t know anything about the canes.

Ok I would tell you I know don’t anything about the Canes but you should know that they are in the division of my favorite team, so I see them play here and there.

What I know about the Canes is they started in 1972 as the New England Whalers of the WHA they played their first two seasons in Boston Arena and Boston Gardens before moving in 1974 to the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford CT, in 1979 they were absorbed into the NHL and renamed the Hartford Whalers because the Boston Bruins didn’t want an NHL team named as New England since Boston was New England’s NHL team.

The Hartford Civic Center was a dilapidated shit box and Karmanos moved the team to North Carolina in 1997 and rebranded the team as the Carolina Hurricanes they played in Greensboro for a few seasons then moved to Raleigh NC, went to the finals in 2002 but lost to Detroit but eventually ended up winning a Cup in 2006 with Brind A’mour lifting the cup as captain who is currently their head coach.

I also know the Canes have won two straight division titles and have exited the playoffs in the second round two years in a row.

It’s also my understanding that Suzuki is injured and hasn’t played during the preseason. It’s hard following all 32 teams especially the Pacific division teams.

If I had to make a lineup I’d go with

Line 1 LW Svechnikov C Aho RW Jarvis
Line 2 LW Teravainen C Stastny RW Necas
Line 3 LW Kotkaniemi C Staal RW Fast
Line 4 LW Martinook C Drury RW Kase

1st Pair LD Slavin RD Burns
2nd Pair LD Skjei RD Pesce
3rd Pair LD De Haan RD Coghlan < Bear if Cog can’t go opening night

Goalies:
Starter: Andersen
Backup: Raanta

Scratches:
RD Bear
C Stepan ~ (PTO) < should be signed once season starts
LW Pacioretty + Torn Achilles 6 months
LD Gardiner + Back Out Indefinitely

Captain: Jordan Staal
Alternate Captain: Jaccob Slavin
Alternate Captain: Jordan Martinook
Alternate Captain: Sebastian Aho

P.S. Jordan Staal is one of the best defensive centers in the league and should end up with a decent raise but I would keep the term at 3 years or less. :badidea:

I can’t believe you wrote/copy+pasted all that from Wikipedia

Suzuki has barely played since being drafted due to injuries. Before even turning pro he suffered a major eye injury. If he can manage to salvage an nhl career at this point it will be incredible. He’s not looked at as a possible roster player right now and likely never will be for the canes.

Also, Kotkaniemi at wing has failed in both Montreal and Carolina. He is a center and will be given every opportunity to succeed there. If he doesn’t work out at 2c it’s possible Necas would get a look as he has expressed desire to move to that position. For the time being, Stastny is on Staal’s lw.

Wikipedia didn’t have dilapidated shit box in their wording i remember the Hartford days fondly.

Does this mean that Kotkaniemi is Carolina’s 2C if Stacy is at 3LW or does Drury come in and trounce the competition and seize the 2C spot from all center competition.

That didn't really happen last year. Staal got the toughest assignments, had the least O-zone draws, didn't play on the PP, killed penalties and his most common line mates were Fast, Nino and Lorentz. He wasn't given offensive chances, he was in a pure defensive role.

Overall TOI/GP: Aho-18:57; Trocheck - 17:52; Staal - 16:38
PP TOI/GP: Aho-2:58; Trocheck-2:57; Staal - 0:42
SH TOI/GP: Staal - 2:13; Aho - 1:54; Trocheck - 1:46
ES TOI/GP: Aho - 14:05; Staal - 13:43; Trocheck - 13:14
Ozone Starts: Staal - 52%; Trocheck - 53%; Aho - 57%; Kotkaniemi - 57%
QoCrel: Staal = .240; Aho = .127; Trocheck = -.188; Kotkaniemi = -.494
Most common 5v5 line mates for Staal:

Fast - 764 min.
Nino - 620 min.
Lorentz - 162 min.

A lot depends on the dollars and term, but this guy has a lot left to contribute to Carolina. Still a very good player, but he doesn't chip in the offense he'd have done five years ago. I imagine they'll get it right. Waddell has aced most of his recent transactions.
