I can see that. But $3m per is actually quite cheap nowadays. Maybe its the fact his deal runs thru next year too.

In Jussi's case, your second sentence outweighs the first.

The cap is going down next season. The "buyer" teams are generally the ones with the least cap flexibility. There aren't many teams out there who 1) need a Jokinen 2) Have the cap space to fit him in right now 3) Will have the cap space for him next season.

Jussi is the first of many overpaid, middle-6 type players who are going to get cut loose by buyouts and waivers. I'm not completely clear as to the timing of this whole thing, but it's not a shock that he didn't get moved on the trade market and it won't be a huge shock if he passes right through waivers too.

FTFY - otherwise, spot on, in my opinion, though I wouldn't be too surprised if somebody took a waiver bid on him.

Fans can speculate all they want but what truly goes on behind the scenes for whatever reasons won't be understood completely unless they come out with some sort of explanation. To me, what has taken place of late is that JR sees the writing on the wall and has gone into rebuild mode. Letting these guys go is a necassary part of that. They are clearly not part of future plans but their salaries are.

How does letting Wallace and Jokinen go signal a rebuild?

Exactly - the Canes are looking to send Wallace down to Charlotte to help them with their injury situation especially since he's made redundant by Hall. There's been no reports of JR feeling out other GMs for a firesale, only Jokinen was waived. We haven't shipped off everybody but the core for draft picks and prospects. We're still on the playoff bubble. Not exactly signs of a rebuild.

You can't go into re-build when you have, what...like 7 or 8 guys on long term deals?

Now when these contracts are dealt for picks/prospects, THAT is a re-build.

I was one of those. It's gotta be that 2nd year thats keeping people away.

Yeah, I'm guessing it is, but Mike Smith even tweeted yesterday that Waivers was not the first option...so it's safe to assume Rutherford tried to trade him to no avail.

JR must be pissed. Can't even give his contract away.

He was hoping for someone to pick him up but on the other hand IMO he probably was hoping if he actually cleared that it would light a fire up on his ass and get back to producing with a new mindset. Then again, sticking him in the 3rd line might not be the best for him in terms of chances to create but Nash can be the arguing point for that statement.

Lets hope he does hustle and prove his worth.

Don't rule out JR trying to trade him and eating some salary or sending something else (draft pick) along in the trade o get rid of the salary.

The Trade Board never ceases to disappoint. They can't wrap their minds around the fact that no GM wanted Jussi. FWIW I thought a GM with some cap room to play with might take a chance, but I didn't see it as a foregone conclusion that he'd be leaving Raleigh.

We have to take a contract back. We can lose jussi, but it won't be to alleviate money issues from the semin deal. We can trade him for Komi, and try to get TO to eat the appropriate amount to make it even. Things like that. Jr was trying to avoid it. Lebrun says teams are interested in jokinen, but didn't want the second year of the contact. We are taking something back we don't want to move him right now.
