The more people who call out the officials, the worse the league gets embarrassed. Eventually, the gambling companies have grounds for a lawsuit if the league's refusal to clean things up impacts their revenue due to consumers realizing that the games aren't being called honestly.

None of this is even close to being remotely true.

So you don't think that the open match fixing is costing sportsbooks money, or that they don't have right to hold the league accountable for the refs' criminal behavior? There's no reason they shouldn't have recourse for refusal of the league to start forcing the officials to start acting like professionals.

1. Any proof of this “open match fixing” you speak of?

2. No, sportsbooks don’t “have the right to hold leagues accountable for ref’s criminal behaviour”. (ie Tim Donaghy)

Campbell emails showed written documentation, not to mention the consistent misconduct of guys like Sutherland. The WWE has similar officiating to the NHL.

Officiating has been pretty poor and far from perfect. I don't have an issue with that being called out, even by the coaches.

But when you call it out over very clear penalties, the strength of your point gets lost. When you proceed to comply after "fighting the man" as some in this thread suggested, the performance is meaningless.

Tortorella could have stayed. The ref would either have to look impotent by allowing him to stay. Or put the ref in the uncomfortable position of calling the game a forfeit, and have an arena full of upset fans who spent a lot of money to watch half a period of hockey. It's two points lost, but if you really care about how bad the reffing is, then isn't that the bigger picture?

On the flipside, the ref calling for the ejection could have gone to talk to him at initial refusal. He's been a ref long enough and is no stranger to people yelling at him. Making everyone else talk to Tortorella over his own call is a bad look. I'd say it just made things worse.

Hopefully those who simply find it entertaining got their money's worth. Not even saying it as a judgment. I don't find Tortorella's antics amusing. I just think it was a meaningless tantrum over a couple valid calls that won't move the needle in the quality of officiating.

I like Torts and thought it was hilarious that he (or anyone doing that kind of pontificating) had to tuck tail and walk out 30s after his spittingn and ranting of “I’m staying right f*cking here”

I’m guessing they would’ve just called another bench minor if he’d hung around much longer… but at some point it was always going to end with him just walking away.

That seems pretty pie in the sky to me but I wouldn't complain if something made the NHL improve their officiating.
