Would you have said the same about Marleau before he left?
Lifestyle differences. Marleau said after signing that this is something he's always wanted to do. Thornton loves life in California, he's the most laid back guy in the league.

Besides, I can't imagine the conversation with Lou about his beard would go over too well.

He wanted to play for Babcock. I think if Thornton was leaving it would have been last July. Only way I see him leaving SJ is if he’s forced out with a Tavares signing or something

Your claim was that he requested a trade to a contender. Also, neither of those articles were ever proven to be true. You are missing something. It's called a reasonable amount of skepticism. Instead, you just believe anything that is said without any credible evidence to support it.

So you're saying neither bob mckenzie nor eliotte friedman are reliable? They were the ones reporting it and are mentioning multiple NHL GMs confirming it.

Edit to add: Marleau did in fact leave for a contender as soon as he could. So it absolutely looks like they were right.

More edits: Wasn't just those two. It was also Lebrun and Nichols saying the request was made. As does the local SJ paper and SJ bloggers.

Patrick Marleau leave Sharks, signs with Toronto Maple Leafs

Those Patrick Marleau trade rumors aren't leaving

Boston has cap room for 1 year to sign a 3rd line center... riley nash owes it to himself to seek a 3-4 year deal

Boston gives thornton his best chance at a cup... lets him rehab his reputation from early in career when boston traded him. Id suggest he probably gets to play with backes/donato which should potentially be a great 3rd line

Gives boston a year to ripen jfk/federic without too much preasure

No, the two are not reliable. McKenzie just happens to be the most reliable of the rumormongers but even he gets a large amount of his rumors wrong. Also, GM's lie...a lot. Marleau signing in Toronto doesn't confirm that claim either. Those are unrelated. There was nothing but a bunch of people trying to pick up on something that was never actually confirmed by anyone credible.

I'm going to go with McKenzie, Lebrun, Friedman, McKenzie's reports of multiple NHL Gms, and Nichols as well as the SJ local paper and at least one sharks blogger especially over someone whose first response is "insult insult they're lying"

That's fine but you're admitting that you believe things without evidence and believe guys who have a vested self-interest in pushing these stories for clicks and have no real sense of skepticism.

On the contrary. This is evidence that multiple NHL GMs are saying it. This isn't some random fringe insider. It's Lebrun, McKenzie, Nichols, Friedman and local pro shark sites.

Your default to insults without providing anything other than "they're lying" says more about you than anything else.

Seems like such an inconsequential hill to die on. No one can really know except Marleau and those in his immediate orbit. But considering the quantity of reports he was at least open to a trade, and the fact he chose to go to Toronto when the opportunity presented itself, it all at least indicates its a very strong likelihood Marleau was open to/actively seeking a trade at some point.

At the very least I’d say it’s a reasonable inference from everything that has been reported and transpired.

Making an argument isn't picking a hill to die on. If someone said that he was open to it and supported it with that information then sure you can make that argument but saying he had requested it and then using that is simply incorrect. The free agency thing is just simply not related to the trade rumors. It would be reasonable to say that he was open to a trade based on that stuff. It is not reasonable to say that he had requested a trade to a contender based on that information as the original claim I responded to was about.

Marleau himself said he wore his carpet out pacing all night deciding on if he was going to take the money and go to Toronto or stay in SJ. Yeah that really sounds like he wanted out and took the first chance he got.......

Marleau wore 'out a few carpets' making decision to leave Sharks
