Thornton was already recognized as a better playmaker than Sakic.

That said, Thornton’s about half the goal scorer.
He'll have at least 2/3 the goals Sakic does when he retires, while playing in lower scoring times (on avg).

Not arguing that Sakic is a much better scorer, just think your last part is a bit exaggerated.

the first nhl game i ever saw live, thornton scored the ot winner. my dad told me he was the best player for either team, and then said he was surprised that thornton scored the winner, and i said i knew he would score it because he was the best player. my dad explained that thornton didn't really like to shoot and i said "maybe he just doesn't like playing that much." and my dad died laughing. he still tells the story.
