The youth movement is happening. Chevy doesn't seem to keen on bringing in anyone else. He said he wants to give Armia a shot at the top 9 and Copp a shot at the 4th line.
Copp destroyed the faceoff circle his entire career and in his one NHL game managed to destroy it again. Faceoff's are the only thing Slater is good for in my opinion even in a limited role the Jets use him for it. If Copp can play even half of the defensive game we have seen from him through his entire career up until now at the NHL level than he's already better than Slater IMO. I say good luck to Slater but I don't think he'll ever have a job as a Jet again. Using this logic we should let everyone stew until they get enough experience to replace our retired vets...

Youth is a fact of life in the NHL. The Jets need to inject youth into the line-up so that they can manage the salary cap.

Somewhere nice
So Jets are back to being the #1 prospect pool :)

I still would like

Ehlers
Petan
Armia
Morrissey
Copp
Lemuiex

to make the team in that order (IMO)

If they all make it - that would be something. But, it will be a #'s game by then.

Agree on Ehlers.

I don't think some concern over our prospects playing uninspired or downright bad hockey in high profile games leading into TC amounts to "the sky is falling". Claiming this means nothing seems far more absurd. If that were so, I guess all the Jets brass and scouts from across the league in attendance must have taken a wrong left turn at Albuquerque. After all, nobody cares and it don't matter, right? ;)

I think this tournament meant a heck of a lot more for guys like Olsen, Stoykewich, and Fronk than anyone who was always going to go to main camp, and especially anyone who has a real shot of making the Jets roster this year.

Anybody know if the replay is up yet? Or a scoring summary at least?

I had to get up early this morning and couldn't stay up to watch last night.

I'm not holding out much hope for Copp to step up immediately as a force in the face-off circle. It's traditionally been a slow climb for even the most talented centres to get acclimated on the dot in the NHL, so if Copp can even eke out a 50% on the year I'll be elated and will pencil him as a face-off specialist a couple years down the road.

Copp has been good on the dot, but I remain skeptical that he will have much of an impact there.

Faceoff percentage tends to improve with time. Scheif and Petan won awards for faceoffs in junior.

Horvat, Monahan and Bjugstad all came in last season with little experience and tore up the dot. It's entirely possible. Even Lowry wasn't bad at 47.2% and I fully expect Copp to be better than Lowry given his history. A 48% in his first year would be more than acceptable on 4th line and PK time. The difference with Copp is that he has led international tournaments in faceoff wins and % as well as tore up the NCAA which is considered harder to do that tearing up the WHL.

A 50% would be awesome. Especially if he plays some PK time. Heck I'd settle for a 47.5% in his first full season. I don't think it's setting to high of a bar to be better than Slater at all other aspects of his game. It's not like Slater is a good 4th liner outside of his faceoff prowess.

You could literally tell me before the season that Copp ends the year with 0% on the dot and I'd take him ten times out of ten over Slater (who I believe was a league-top-three in face-offs).

As garret9 is fond of pointing out, a face-off is merely the first puck battle after the linesman touches the puck. Sometimes it leads directly to a goal, but often there are dozens more puck battles in between. It's not prudent to give yourself a slightly better chance of winning that first one at the risk of losing the next dozen.

Love Slater's especially-non-hockey work ethic, but he dragged the Jets down offensively and defensively last season. And since the officials were being such babies, he had plenty of opportunity to do so.

Bring on the youth movement.

Where faceoffs are key is on the PK in the Dzone. If you win that first puck battle it gives you a better chance to ice the puck and kill time. I think that is where Copp's bread and butter will be. Much like we used Slater except after the faceoff he won't be such a liability defensively. It's nice to have a faceoff penalty killing specialist on the team. Slater was just a faceoff specialist.
