It is rather amazing. I dunno, I guess in the current era of players being harder to trade, with players staying long-term with one team, and with teams' ups-and-downs in the standings seeming slower to occur, this was bound to happen to someone. Too bad it's Skinner, but it has to be someone.

On the other hand, Skinner has enjoyed shorter and, in a way, less stressful seasons than most productive NHL-ers. He gets more time off every year, which will likely extend his career. And -- oh yeah -- he is getting paid at least $110 million for his career (not counting bonuses, endorsement fees, etc.).

So, I'd say the last laugh goes to Skinner.

Jeff always wanted to be the difference maker and carry his team.

In Carolina Skinner worked the hardest on the whole team in the offseason and would go to Gary Robert's training camps and post vods prepping for the season.

Does he still do that? He was also always smiling and laughing. has Buffalo killed his spirit yet?

He works for the paycheques. I highly doubt winning a cup was ever on this guys mind in his career. Maybe when he was drafted.

If Buffalo doesn’t make the playoffs next year, I wonder if he considers a mutual termination to join a playoff-bound team after 2024-25.

I doubt he’d do it this year since he’s in line for 10 million in 2024-25. But it drops down to 12 million total the next two years. He’d have a career earnings of somewhere close to 87 million after 2024-25 too.

Odds are that the Sabres should be a playoff team in 2025-26, but I wonder if he just gets fed up and goes to join the Oilers, Avalanche, or Panthers etc. for an almost guaranteed ticket to the playoffs.

That's a lot of players who seen barely any playoffs or non at all. Skinner getting closer to the record every year. Just about three seasons away from record. Next year he will be at #3 spot if Sabres can't make playoffs. Surprising to see quite a few HOF and All Stars players on the list.

It still blows my mind that Jeff was able to get the long term contract that he got at the time. It wasn't until 3 years ago where he actually started to live up to a good portion of his contract. Otherwise he's been a complete bust.

Easy free money for Jeff. Must be nice.

To hit 1000 games without making the playoffs even once means you are a good player , otherwise you wouldn't have lasted that long in the league , who is kind of content with missing every year. Thats a rare combination

Again though, Skinner’s career doesn’t actually read that way.

He was drafted during a youth movement phase for Carolina, a team that perpetually finished outside the bubble because their high-end draft picks (other than Skinner) and FA signings were all disappointments.

When that team got a wealthy new owner and blew up its roster to forge a new identity, he forced a trade to a Buffalo team which was in a youth movement and had recently added two #1OAs plus a bunch of other talent under a wealthy owner. He signed a huge long-term contract which made him an un-moveable part of the core for that up and coming team. But it turned out the Sabres were another Carolina, forever spinning their wheels due to a failure to acquire/keep top talent.

It’s just a perfect storm of landing in two incompetent organizations back-to-back, and getting paid at a level which prevents him getting to move around the league. For his individual part in that picture, Skinner has never been a guy who looked content about losing.

If the Sabres were willing to eat 40-50% of his contract he'd be moveable . At 4.5-5.x something he'd be worth the gamble for a contender. Of course he'd have to be willing to move somewhere else thats probably not going to be close to the GTA . Which seems to be part of the issue and how he landed in Buffalo in the first place

I wouldn’t say he doesn’t care. He’s always been a high compete player. When he went to Buffalo, they were one of the up and coming teams with Eichel and Dahlin.

He strikes me more as a guy who wants to win with his team, and doesn’t job-hop around the league to chase a ring. He happens to be in the one place that will not reward him.
If he wanted to win he would have at least attempted to back check once in his previous 1000 games.

He posted some stuff over the summer of being at a breathing training with a bunch of football skill/edge guys (WRs, RBs mostly) in 2022. Didn't see anything last summer, but also wasn't looking for it to be honest.

I was like, no way the Hurricanes must have made it one year and he was just hurt or something....but nope.

Skinner always such an odd goal scorer never sure what you'll get.. one year he'll be on pace for 40 the next he'll get 18 in Carolina.

His first year in Buffalo he got 40, then the next two seasons he got 14 and 7 (in 59 and 53 games) so you think he's done...except the following three years he gets 35, 33 and looks like high 20s this year... What's up with that?
Speaking of the Buffalo years: the first year he rode shotgun with Eichel and feasted under Phil Housley with a 40g season. He then signed his ridiculous contract 8x9M, NMC, and Buffalo got a new coach, renowned hockey terrorist Ralph Krueger. Ralph hated Jeff, and had his $9M salary invested onto the 4th line. Skinner is a lazy hockey player and does not do well when required to play a system. It's why he got traded for peanuts out of Carolina, and why his career had a resurgence under Granato, who pretty much just wants the kids to have fun.

Last I remember that was Ron Hainsey.

I even remember making a post saying would you rather make the playoffs every single year and win the cup or miss the playoffs and the only time you make it you win the cup. Hainsey won the cup.

But, I have a feeling when Skinner is no longer a Sabre, they make the playoffs. Funny how after he left Carolina they finally made the playoffs nearly ten years later. But if his last game is him winning the cup, he'd have probably the best career. Winning rookie of the year, making big bucks, and winning a cup the first and final time he made the playoffs.

Would also mean he's had longer off-seasons to prepare and improve an aspect of his game for the next season if he's also done by early to mid April, save for times he went to play in the Worlds. Take the vacation in April/May and sometime in June work on something.
