If people doesn't think he's one of our best players - yes, he's underrated. If not, well, I sure as hell don't underrate him and I'd be surprise if others do.

Maclemment has no finish and totally disappeared in the Boston series.

He makes a living by dialling the effort level to 11 and killing penalties.

When the playoffs come and everyone dials the effort up he disappears.

Any games that Mac plays 15+ minutes we lose (like last night)

So overrated in leaf land it's pathetic.

Really overrated by pretty much everyone. Sign if you can, and can't find anyone better UFA, but I'd rather us retain May Ray if it's between the two.

If I had to name one player on the Leafs who is smart, versatile, reliable, hard-working and consistent every game, every shift, it would be Jay McClement.

He's become over-rated because he's a Leaf.

He's very good as a 4th line center PK specialist but so are guys like Talbot, Campbell, Condra, Adams, Brodziak, etc. for their teams yet not a single thread is being made about how great these guys are.

Hotstove top 10 penalty killing forwards in the NHL 2010:

1. Jay McClement – Nobody came near to the amount of short handed ice time McClemment experienced last season. In fact, only three players total (all defenseman) had more short handed time of ice than this center. Last season the St. Louis Blues finished first in penalty killing thanks to the effort from this Brampton Battalion alumni. Aside from his 300 plus minutes on the kill, he also contributed with 29 points– none of which same shorthanded. As far as traditional checking line players go, McClement is as genuine as they get. Not necessarily a threat but incredibly defensively aware and able to never get caught out of position. Throw in his league leading 189 shorthanded faceoffs won and we will show you the master of the kill.

Back in 2010 and still in 2013.

Far from a liability in the offensive zone as well, despite what some may have you believe.

He's very versatile. Can fill in nicely at any position up or down the lineup. After Phaneuf, I would say he's the top priority re-signing from our pending UFAs.

I would sign Bolland, Gardiner, Franson, Mark Fraser and our beloved Optimus Reim before him.

He just played 18 minutes against the pens. He's actually averaging 16 minutes a game so far this season too. Argument invalid.

can Nazem, Phil or Joffey kill penalties like Jay ??

Take the goaltending away and I'll tell you how good of a Penalty killer Jay really is... He's effective at what he does that doesn't make him underrated.

Underrated are all 3 of those names you have mentioned above including Phaneuf when they get compared to the games best players. That's who's truly underrated on the Leafs

Toronto.
Jay McClement is the only player on the team to have played in every game thus far and fail to score a point. I don't entirely know how much that matters, it's really not his job to do so in the first place. Underrated or overrated, he's still contributed every night in a role we need to be successful.

With Kessel/Lupul/Clarkson/JVR/Bozak (and soon to be Kadri) all locked up through 2018, I'm not sure how much you would want to commit to re-signing Jay. He's consistently made 1.5 million for the last 5 years on 2 seperate contracts, I imagine retaining him on another 3 year deal would cost the same.

I think at the end of the day he fills a role, and our PK success speaks for itself.

We keep both.

Bolland and McClemment but Jay's game isn't overly glorified. No other GM in the entire NHL can pay him $2M. Kulemin will be moved to free up cap for these 2.

He'll be signed along with Bolland and Phaneuf. Kulemin probably walks. I'm a Kulemin fan, but Centers that are good defensively are better than defensive wingers.

If Nonis can sign Bolland Kulemin AND McClement to reasonable contracts, I'm fine with keeping all 3.

He's under rated but if he was making $3.5 mil everyone would be complaining about his lack of offense because all anyone does is obsess about players value in relation to the salary cap these days.
