This is a good pickup. It's only a PTO - so if Cowen comes in really wanting it, he could be a solid 5-6 if Bigras or another young D isnt quite ready.

Wideman, Polak, Liles, and Jokipakka all would have come before Cowen. Not sure I'd want any of them, but they are all players who I think can give more than Cowen.

I would prefer Franson as a PTO over Cowen, but I was expecting a couple PTO's for training camp, so not surprised nor disappointed. This move for me is to create more competition at TC and to tell the players from Sakic that nobody's position is safe here.

Probably just a way to give a little competition at LD so Bigras and Siemens don't feel too safe. I highly doubt that Sakic actually intends to sign a big slow lumbering guy, it flies right in the face of #youngerfaster.
