Virtanen can be a decent bottom six winger that provides energy, physicality, and an above bottom six scoring ability. His issue now isn't that he hasn't reached his draft position-defined potential (he obviously won't). His issue now is completely about consistency. If he can play like he did last night on a consistent basis, he is a valuable asset as a bottom six winger on a competitive team.

Jake can, if he chooses to, impact the game with physicality. He popped Wee Willie last night, and after that hit Double Flamingo shied from any and all contact. Even though the Pearson goal was weak, Wonderful Willie stepped out of Pearson’s way in the neutral zone, which gave Tanner a free path down the wall. Hoping Jake lays the body more on the soft skilled players like Willie.

Say what you want about Virtanen, but the reality is when he's in the lineup the Canucks just look like a faster, more dangerous team.

It's become more obvious that he's never going to be a big-time scorer, but he's useful piece in your bottom six even if a bit overpaid.

Agreed. I wouldn’t rush to get rid of him, he is a useful player when he’s on.

He has the two negative qualities that will ruin any player. Low hockey IQ and poor work ethic. You can get by with one or the other, but not having both means he'll always be a bum. He honestly looks like a faster, poor man's Steve Bernier.

You guys are being WAY too impatient with Jakey. Remember powerforwards take longer and he will be a HUGE asset for us in FUTURE playoffs. Just gotta wait a few more years and he will be a BEAST

Pretty well agree with this......But coming off an 18 goal season and as a former high first round draft pick he'd have commanded some decent assets if Benning had dealt him in the off-season.

Instead he re-signs him and watches his trade value implode this season. Now they couldn't get a bag of pucks for him.

How can one GM consistently get it wrong?

Before this season, Virtanen's stats truly say he has been steadily improving every year. I wouldn't take too much away from 2020-21 season considering it's a random division, less games, and the roster has been depleted from injuries which hasn't gave Jake a consistent role on the roster.

He's looked like utter dog shit this entire season.

Brandon Pirri can score 18 in his sleep. It doesn't mean jack

Other GM's are able to see Jake for what he is, Jimbo doesn't.

MacEwen can basically provide what Jake does except he's bigger and tougher and a fraction of the cost.

So has the whole team, doesn't mean you trade away Miller/Hughes/Horvat.

No, they haven't. Horvat has looked great, same with Pettersson, Miller, Hoglander, etc. Some players might have taken a small step back because the team in general took a step back, but no one has regressed as badly as Virtanen. He pretty much has no value, or even negative value at this point.

Really? Did Jim give Virtanen a contract longer than 2 years since his ELC? Has he been praising Virtanen and never criticized him? Were there no rumours of him being shopped?

#2 in hits per game is Virtanen on this team. He's not going anywhere, go pick on somebody else.

Throwing the body a lot more lately,
you can feel the momentum shift a bit when he does shit like that.
It’s a shame it only happens every blue moon.

I don't even know what point you are trying to make. Defending Benning?

Not longer than 2 years but still about 1.5 mil more than he should be making. 18 goals was a mirage, other Gm's likely saw this, Jim didn't.

Jim did criticize him(about his play in the playoff bubble)....then a month later he signed him to the overpaid contract.

Does anyone remember Utica Comet Tanner Kero?

Josh Leivo? Sam Gagner Adam Gaudette Ben Hutton!? Jayce Hawrlyuk, Jimmy Vesey, Travis Hamonic

Oh man really getting down to the itty gritty former Canuck Alumni here...brace yourself..... Zac Dalpe! Brad Richardson, Alex Biega, Nic Dowd Damn Luke Schenn 0.1 p/gp off from qualifying

All of those guys are outproducing Virtanen this year lol. I just love funny tidbits like that.

There are essential no 23-26 year old players in the league producing worse offensively than Virtanen and his cap hit is double of what most of theirs are

Beagle and Roussel are also outproducing Virtanen, somehow. Those three have a combined 6 goals and a combined 8.55 cap hit. Just brutal

How does he have 0 assists in 36 games? It's pretty much impossible for a forward to do that in today's NHL
