Sweet. That’s a fantastic price.

His game in the playoffs was awesome.

We got everyone back now and ready to roll!

So Armstrong was able to do exactly what he said he wanted to do, including the cap buffer amount he was looking for. Do you think he has something in mind at the deadline with that cap space? If there are no significant injury call ups to eat the cap space, there should be room for a significant rental if desired.

Pickup Maroon when TBL puts him on waivers.

I am so relieved! I love Barbashev.:) I actually like him more than Sanford, but I understand why he didn't get more than Zach. Could call by Armstrong, the two year term is perfect! I pretty much knew that both sides would reach a mutually beneficial agreement, but you know there is that one corner of your mind that harbours that creeping doubt. Good signing!

Why Ivan Barbashev only got $1.475 AVV

Barbashev is one of those players that you know could have a much higher ceiling. He needs to have a SunnyD breakout year. Army did very well on this contract.

I’m thinking someone like Mike Hoffman, assuming we have no injuries on defense and Florida is out of the playoff race.

I'm guessing there isn't a firm "plan" for that money, but that the intention is to ensure that we can plug whatever hole needs to be plugged in February. The biggest lesson from last year is that today's NHL is incredibly unpredictable. This cushion allows us to assess our team and guys like Kyrou, Fabbri, Blais, Sanford and Mac for 3+ months and then have the cap space to fit an upgrade in if needed. Or maybe the D gets injured (or regresses) more than expected and we want to upgrade the left side. Or maybe Binny struggles in his first full year as a starter and we need to address the crease (least likely outcome IMO).

Whatever unexpected hole/weakness we have, Army has the cushion to be able to address it. Assuming Pouliot is the odd man out, we've got $1.2 mil in space with a 23 man roster. Just shy of $2 mil if we roll a 22 man roster when we're healthy to bank more space. That's enough for a $4+ mil player at the deadline. even if we're not sending salary back in a trade. I don't know what the possible bonuses are for Dunn and Thomas, but this is also enough cushion that we should be able to absorb them this season if they're met instead of rolling them into next year.

TLDR: I think this cushion is essentially there to allow the team to evaluate multiple young/depth guys for half a season and then plug whatever hole is created when 1 or 2 inevitably fall short of hopes/expectations.

Absolutely amazing how low Army did get Barbashev cap. Tho, can't undertand why Barbashev allowed to go lower than Sanford?

It's been explained about a million times. He didn't have arbitration rights and going to the KHL would have easily cost him more money over the next 4+ years than he will make by signing this contract. I'd be stunned if Barby had a 2 year KHL offer of $2 mil per year. 3 years ago, there were only 7 KHL players making $2 mil per year or more and since then they have decreased their salary cap among tons of reports that the league is bleeding money outside the top few teams. A bottom 6 NHL guy wasn't going to get a KHL offer to be one of the highest paid players in the league. So we are talking about a difference of less than $1 mil over 2 years between what we eventually signed him for and what he likely got offered in the KHL. But by taking that extra money, he would either commit to 4 years in the KHL or commit to coming back to the Blues 2 years from now and taking about this kind of money instead of the raise he will almost certainly get by playing 2 more NHL seasons. Taking an extra few hundred grand per year in the KHL now would have cost him a huge amount of money down the line on top of the fact that he's not in the best league in the world for 2 years.

Going to the KHL would have hurt Barby more than it would have hurt the Blues.

He had zero leverage while Sanford had the leverage of an arbitration award. The CBA is intentionally designed to allow teams to underpay guys in Barby's position.

For our next Stanley Cup parade, the team needs to hire a handler or two for each player to make sure nobody falls off a truck, gets run over, etc.

Perfect deal for us, only leaves us with 500k space though right?
More like 1.2 mil

Adding barby to roster means someone like macmac will be in minor leagues and not counting against cap so you have to subtract macmacs 750k from the cap total when you add barbys.

Capfriendly is a bit of an inaccurate site as it will always include enough players to get to 23 to count against cap even if some of those players obviously arent going to make team and count against cap because we are obviously signing someone like barby.

It as result makes people think we have less cap space than we actually do

Take Pouilot off the roster and you're up to $2 million on cap space - right where Army wanted to be.
