Is this year....like....the worst year?

I can't believe no-one else picked up on this... REALLY? The Oilers wouldn't be in Edmonton today without CAL NICHOLS.

Katz came along and forced a division in the ownership group when they were on solid financial footing, after the club's financial valuation had risen sharply since EOG bought the team.

I admit that the valuation has again raised so sharply because Katz had the vision and wherewithal to get the new arena built... but the team would not be leaving if he hadn't stepped in.

I'd rather see a community group own a team any day over one single profit-motivated owner. See Green Bay Packers.
|Don't forget Slats left the Oilers because EIG kept interfering. Can't remember where it was said but that's a fact.

There is a lot of informal talk of people wanting to change them again - so that the Oilers simply could not draft #1 pick this year or even next year - even if they were lucky enough to win the lottery again.
People were upset when the Oilers won the lottery in 2010 despite never having drafted #1 overall ever. It seems only the Oilers get bashed for drafting #1 overall since they got bashed for it in 2010 when they had never drafted first overall prior to that.

People weren't upset about the Oilers picking 1st in 2010. They just wanted to twist the knife in Leafs' fans side about giving up a 1st overall+ for Kessel.

I don't recall anybody being upset with Edmonton winning the lottery and drafting their first overall pick. When you've drafted first overall 4 times in 6 years and you're still a basement dwelling team, than I can understand why people would get upset.

Oilers wouldn't be in Edmonton today without Darryl Katz, people tend to forget that.

Wut? haha.

The EIG didn't even want to sell the Oilers. They were finally making good money. Katz came in and made a huge offer to get them.

The team would have moved if EIG hadn't sold the team. Slats left because EIG kept interfering. Lowe said he'd resign if EIG remained owners. EIG shouldn't be treated like they never did anything wrong.

Sure they did stuff wrong, but there was never a threat of the team moving in the last decade.

That doesn't make any sense, it's not possible for the entire league to get better. Dallas/Arizona are improved, and Anaheim/Tbay and some others are worse as a result.

Carolina makes for a poor example as well. They were tied for last in the league with the Oilers as early as last Sunday, and probably will finish in the bottom 5 by the end of the year once again.

It made perfect sense.

The league is improving, we aren't.

Remember when Nuge broke into the league, pundits were saying he'd be a 100pt guy? See how league scoring leaders are getting less points?

Pre-scouting, analytics, training. All of these things are so refined. The talent level is higher. This team has been stagnating in a losing culture for so long that we haven't been able to keep up with the rate of inflation, let alone make gains.

If you look at the examples in the post I'm quoting, he's referring to teams moving up the standings.

Your assertion that every team is getting better, only off the ice, is completely unsupported anyways. Many teams go backwards all the time(hiring torts like Columbus did is backwards thinking), and it's silly to think that the Oilers have fallen behind in that aspect when they overhauled the coaching staff, front office, and half the scouting staff.

Not sure what pundits and RNH have to do with anything though. RNH isn't the offensive dynamo people predicted because he never really had the potential to be, the signs were there even in his junior career. Even pundits get caught up in hype, and it doesn't require the entire league to get better to explain why he isn't.

Where did you pull that out of?

Don't have anything to add to this thread...

But is anyone else getting dog food commercials in Spanish at the top of the page? So weird.

Nope the team has been a lot better (visually) even though there record and a few bad games says no. The oilers also have the most man games lost.

The Oilers were built.............???

The Oilers are build the wrong way..........we blamed Lowe, MacT, coaches, GM, now we have experience Coaches and an experienced GM and where are we...........still at the bottom of the league?

Look at teams like Nashville, New Jersey. even Detroit .........we have better forwards but they have better goaltending and a better defence.

That's why we are bottom feeders.......its not the front office, not the young group of forwards it's just that we never had the goaltending nor the defencemen.

And until we do we will be forever at the bottom of the ocean.

Agreed. And it's probably mostly just defense. The fact that MacT was unable to acquire a single top 3 defender during his tenure is inexcusable. And he lost one for no reason.

They'll never turn it around. Yes, it's worse than it's ever been. Maybe like five games there of McDavid seemed to lift the curse; it was weird. THen he got hurt and yes right now it's of course worse than ever. Same old loser Oilers.
