Is there really much of a difference between 5'11" and 6'?

It annoys me when I see people talk about people who are 5'11" and calling them 'too small' but when it comes to people who are 6' they are big.

It's 1 inch difference. Is there really a major difference?

Same between 6'4" and 6'5". 6'4" is just another dude, but 6'5" is really tall. Not much difference, but people make a big deal out of it for some reason. It's just an inch, doesn't mean anything.

The difference between someone that's 5'11" and 6' in the NHL is often 2 or 3 inches! :D

hate to sound cliche', but to quote an often quoted saying.. "its not the size, its how you use it".

some guys 5'11 use their body and positioning and strength like they're 6'4, while others that are timid and 6'1 play like they're 5'8.

that made sense until I typed it.

generally when people ask how tall I am, I say 5'14.. or a short 6'2.

I may have shared this here but my dad and his brother and his son are all giants.

My dad is 6'6", my uncle is 6'10" and my cousin is 7'1"

I'm a measly almost 5'11". My mother is 5'2" on a good day and her mother is 4'10"

I play though like I'm 6'4" so I understand what you mean.

You are above average height (I'm assuming you are male even though you're first sentence would indicate otherwise)

You're dad, uncle and cousin are great sizes...for basketball. Your height is much more common in hockey.

I think that weight factors into the equation as well.

I would consider a guy who is 5'10" 200 lbs. bigger than a guy who is 6'0 and 175 lbs.

That's true, but you can add weight, not height.
Scouts and hockey people are obsessed with the 6' marker. Besides, most guys that are listed as 5'11" in the NHL are probably closer to 5'9".

I don't consider 5'11 short, but I do consider 5'10 short. I'm 6'1, so I'm not really extremely taller than those two heights but believe me, you'd notice the difference in reach. I also don't really consider myself tall, I feel like I'm just above average height... 6'4 is where the word "tall" comes into play. Again, by that height you'll normally see a big difference in reach(leg length too, which correlates with your stride).

But I do see your point, but as the saying goes; "You can't teach height."

I forgot to add that almost every NHL height listed is exaggerated by 2-3 inches.
I'm exactly 6' 3/4". I have been since I was 18.
Darren McCarty is listed at 6'1". He's not even close. I met him once and I was easily 3" taller than him. I would say Darren's closer to 5'10" than 6'1".

So for all you guys out there that are self conscience about being 'only' 5'10" or 5'11", don't sweat it. You'd all be over 6' in the NHL. (Which means I'm a MONSTER in the NHL at 6'4" and 215 lbs LOL).

Why don't they just go by their combine heights? I know some pros grow from when they were 18 but those are exact. Like Sidney Crosby was 5'10.3" but he is listed at 5'11.

That's something I've wondered about. Unlike measuring with centimeters, there will be a difference between someone who's 5'11" and 1/16th vs 5'11" and 15/16th's. Do they both call themselves 6'? Personally I've never had to worry about this because I'm exactly 6'. At least going as low as 16th's, can't tell you if I'm closer to 5'11.999" or 6'0.001".

I'm sure you are at some point in the day. But you are taller (measurably) in the morning than at night (assuming you got some horizontal relaxation= range of 1/2"). Back in the day guys would lie down for 3 days straight prior to getting a physical for the RCMP. More than an inch difference in some cases. The minimum (5'10" IIRC) rule is fortunately now a thing of the past.

To answer your question if you are 5'11 1/2" or better you should call yourself 6' not 5'11" (or 6'1" or 6' 2" if you are trying to make the NHL :D)

I doubt they exagerrate weight too much. Probably within 10 lbs.

The funny thing is my dad cousin and uncle all played hockey and Basketball. It would have been awkward to skate I would think.

that sounds about right. Same goes for Marty St Louis(about 5'5, maybe 5'6). I have a buddy that is 5'5 and he comes up to the same part of the boards as marty(In st pete times forum, on skates obviously, not on foot).
