I don't like the contracts, but none of it really diverts from his plan of building through the draft.

He's signing plugs until his draftees are ready.

Absolutely not. Yzerman is turning into Jim Benning handing out long term deals to mediocre replacement players. Benning did this for years and completely destroyed the Canucks. Yzerman is doing the exact same thing
3-5 year deals are "Long term"?

Very good drafting, average in every other area, which means he’s above average.

I am not sure his drafting is even that good. The Seider pick was obviously great but feels like hes been living off that pick. Hard to say though, its too early for a lot of the picks. He is great at acquiring picks. His signings have been bad though.

Very confused by his signings today.

They interviewed him at the draft and he seemed to be aware they were still a ways off from even contending for a wild card spot, and were very much in the midst of their rebuild.

Then he goes out to make a bunch of moves that a team “on the verge” could reasonably make.
Wtf?

He's really bad at winning draft lotteries and subsequently satisfying possibly delusional idealists who believe you can reliably win in this league without draft lottery help.

It's funny because the GMs most people here would probably rank as "the best GMs" probably all have a lottery superstar or two on their rosters.

He was straight up Benning-esque today.

But you always have to wait to see how the team performs. Maybe these overpaid misfits Mighty Ducks their way into the playoffs.

He absolutely deserves recognition for what he built in Tampa and for moves like drafting Seider. But the last 2 free agencies have been horrid. Spending over 11 million on Chiarot, Holl, and Maatta should be enough to get you fired

It feels like he’s not fully committed to a rebuild, or wants to get out of it prematurely. While down “at the bottom” they didn’t draft high enough for long enough to nab their next superstar forward and now they’re likely to be stuck picking at or outside the top ten every year.

Inherit a team with Stamkos and Hedman
Full credit for drafting vasilevski (even though they liked slater kookoo better and chose him before)
Lucked out grabbing 2 franchise players outside of the first round in kucherov and point

These guys are all basically interchangeable, the guys with draft luck have better reputations than the guys without

He was viewed as the best GM in the league during his Tampa days. Funny how things change.

Given Mike Gillis is still responsible for the current Canucks, I'd say Stevie Y. is sitting pretty as a back to back champion as GM.

He's building the wings with same philosophy that Brian Burke did in Toronto.

Spoiler alert - it doesn't go well.
