Is Peter Chiarelli the worst trading GM in the league?

Trades aren't what necessarily make you a bad GM, it's more of what you've not done or what you've failed miserably at trying to do.

In his case, it's the awful set of complementary players they have, what a shitty bottom six that is.

In his moves with Edmonton, they are all ones meant more for a team in 2002 than in 2017. He's made the team significantly slower. Allof those acquisitions were slow.
Everyone knew Reinhart was a poor man's Luke Schenn by the time the Islanders gave up on him.

He's fine with minor trades (Kassian/Maroon/Talbot) but gets smoked on the major ones.

Good
  • Hall for Larsson (can argue this to death, at worst its neutral imo)
  • Scrivens for Kassian (despite him not being great this year he came for free)
  • Sekera signing
  • 4th + Gernat for Maroon(25% retained)
  • 2nd+5th+7th for Talbot+7th
Neutral
  • Caggiula signing (pretty meh at this point)
  • Benning signing (similar to Caggiula)
  • Letestu signing (good on PP, useless at even strength)
  • Marincin for 4th
  • 4th (from Marincin trade)+Ewanyk for Gryba (he belongs as a 7/8)

Bad (so far)
  • 16th+33rd for Reinhart (set the team back an entire draft with this abomination)
  • Lucic contract
  • Russell contract
  • Eberle for Strome
  • Jokinen signing
  • Gustavsson signing last year
  • Pouliot buyout (didn't make much sense to prolong the cap hit)
  • Auvitu (doesn't do much)
He's probably not the worst trading GM although he not very good at that, but his biggest issues are his signings.

Would add another header after Bad called Abomination, where the Seguin trade would have its own place.

Also not sure about Hall for Larsson, personally don't like it.

Other than that, seems good.

He's good at identifying immediate weak points in the roster, and thats it.

Worst in the league at trading (someone please ban him from calling Garth Snow) and just as bad at contract negotiations.

A vocal minority of Oilers fans seem to love him though

We'll never agree on Larsson that much was clear in the Larsson vs. Zaitsev poll, and thats fine.

I defended Chia for a while early on when he made some good minor moves, but his mistakes are compounding and its time for him to go. Hope they fire him soon, but I doubt they will.
