He's about to win back 2 back Art Rosses. That's a 'generational accomplishment'.
It's impressive but he also has one career playoff series win. Give him time he will hit "generational" in terms of accomplishments. For now enjoy the generational talent before our eyes.

not yet. he still has to prove more. sure he's won an art ross and a hart and could win another one this year but thats just it so far. i know he also only 20 years old and will play more games in the futures and win more trophies. if he wins like 4 or 5 art rosses then he'd be generational regardless of his future.

If generational is Orr/Lemieux level - no.

If generational is best player of his generation - yes. But Crosby would be here as well depending on how one defines a generation.

He has all the tools to be a Generational player and is viewed upon as becoming such.

He was a Generational prospect and has quickly cemented himself an an Elite player arguably already the best in the league after his 2nd season. If his career goes as expected he will absolutely be defined as a Generational player.

No, he's not generational yet, depending on what your definition is.

@DominicBoltsFan hit the nail on the head. Talent wise 97 is definitely there, but until he wins at least one Stanley Cup (accomplishments) he'll continue to be overlooked as a true generational player.

Hard to evaluate whether a player is generational in only 3 years. He's well on his way, too bad the Oil are not in the playoffs this year - the way he's going right now he woulda made it interesting. Always next year.

No option for too early?

He hasn't taken himself out of the possibility, cough Matthews cough, but it is way too early to say that he is generational.

As much as you can be in the modern era, yes.

You'll never IMO see Gretzky/Lemieux level seperation because goaltending is too good today and the average ability of the lower tier players on every team is much higher than it was in the past.

It's funny to me how worked up people get about the word "generational" when there isn't even an agreed upon definition of it for hockey. He has the skills currently for any and everything to be on the table though.

I'm of the opinion that only a few players in history have earned this title after years and years of continued dominance. So no, a 21 year old is not generational to me, but it's not out of the question if he continues the way he is playing.

He will have 3 straight scoring titles. You can quote this if you want

Well, if Jack Hughes or someone turns out better, then it's hard for McDavid to be generational. But he's the best player since Crosby, so I have no problem calling him generational for now. Best prospect in 15 years and living up to the hype. Will he keep it? Who knows, the young talent coming into the league is incredible and somebody might be better soon. Doubtful, but you never know.

Absolutely in the regular season, like Peyton Manning. One of the best ever to do it in the regular season.

Playoffs could be a different story though.

If we compare his first 3 seasons to Crosby's they are pretty close with an edge to McDavid. Crosby had more points in his first 3 seasons but they were also 3 of the highest scoring seasons since the early 90s and while scoring is up this season it was not the last 2 years.

McDavid
Year 1: Missed time but was 3rd in points per game
Year 2: 1st in points, 1st in points per game
Year 3: 1st in points, 3rd in points per game

Crosby
Year 1: 6th in points, 7th in points per game
Year 2: 1st in points, 1st in points per game
Year 3: Missed time but was 2nd in points per game

from 1988 and 1996 Mario Lemieux was by far the best of his generation and those years included Gretzky.

88-89: 199 points in 76 gamesand look his roster....horrible roster..
92-93: 160 points in 60 games with cancer.....he had 104 points in his first 39 games when he got cancer.....returning from cancer and 56 points in 21 games...
