Is Jarome Iginla's career over?

Depends how his hip are after the surgery. If he's got the drive and can be in shape, I think he can be a third line winger on a better team. Alternatively with PP duties.

It seems like it would have to be over now, but then again he was still skating with a pro team and waiting for an NHL offer this spring. So there’s nothing stopping him from gutting it out until he gets a firm “no” this fall.

He only wants to sign with a contender.

The problem is, after watching that cup final, there is no spot for someone like Iginla on a cup winning team.

4th line RW Smith-Pelley was beastly in the playoffs. Swapping him with Iginla and the caps would have taken a huge hit.

Maybe a reunion with Pittsburgh? Vegas or Tampa? For Vegas, I think that the players wouldn't mind a veteran presence along with Neal. They can also scratch Iginla on and off for a few playoff games...

His career in the NHL is almost certainly over. If nobody signed him last year, not even at the deadline, no one is signing him this year. There’s not many examples of 40+ year old players sitting out an entire year, then coming back to play in the league.

I would think he's done, but Claude Lemieux came out of retirement at like 43 and after 3 years out of the game, sooo.... anything is possible.

Yeah, that's the name that jumped out to me. There's still a small chance for him to come back, but it can only happen if he can accept being a secondary guy, is healthy enough, and still has the drive.

The guy has scored 600 goals. If he wants to continue and is in good enough shape to do so maybe somebody gives him a shot. Wouldn't bet on it though.

Meaningful minutes on a cup contender was his stance last September.
Jarome Iginla gets ‘selective’: Veteran forward remains unsigned by choice as NHL training camps loom

Seemed to be re-iterated prior to the trade deadline:

I just don't see a spot for him on a cup contender. The players he would need to displace on those teams are far superior than Iginla is now. Look at What Devante Smith Pelly did on the 4th line RW position in Washington. I don't see Iginla being able to do that.

If he were signed as a Black Ace, he might not get his name on the cup. But that's about as good as a contender might give him.

He played decent down the stretch with the Kings one season ago, but he wasn't good the rest of the year. He would need to be really sheltered with PP time (he's still effective an a PP shot). I just don't see what team would be able to give him that role.
