With the Pens clinching 2nd in the Metro, there is no reason to ice Crosby especially that it will take 5 goals from Kucherov to beat him for the Rocket.

So with that in mind the last 3 seasons
88 in 74
85 in 78
84 in 77

I know the league has changed and all, but is he now basically an 80 point player?

Him and his team have been plagued with injuries, and the league is a tougher one to score in nowadays. I don't know if he finishes those seasons with less than 90 points if he played a full 82 though tbh.

He is 1.12 ppg in last 3 seasons which averages for 92 points in 82 games.

That's still extremely good considering how difficult it's to score points in the current league, and Mike Johnston effect.

Look at the GP. Full season, he's at least a 90 point guy even with horrific coaching (before this year) and major injuries to supporting cast (this year).

And anyone who's planning to say "it's just an excuse" can just ****. Crosby was gunning for 60 goals and 110 points until he got stuck with Chris "Offensive Chances Blackhole" Kunitz for more than two months.

So you acknowledge that if he was to play the last 2 games he probably wouldn't finish an 80 pt player... then decide to make a thread to ask if he is an 80 pt player now?

He's roughly a ~90-95 point player if he plays 82 games.

That's not because of him getting any worse though, but rather scoring levels being down for top scorers. That will still put you in Art Ross contention every year with current scoring levels.

Not neccessarily. I mean he didn't do well under Mike Johnston. Since Sullivan took over, he's got over 1.2 in PPG and most points in the league. This year, the Penguins have been decimated by injuries. He was tied for the point lead, with 6-7 games less than the other guy, a couple of weeks ago, before his wingers went down and the Penguins started slumping a bit. He's basically scored 2 PPG since he started playing with Guenzel-Sheary, so I'm excited what those three can do next season.

More like a 90 points player, based on the last 3 seasons and the amount of games he missed.

With a full season this year, 100 points would have still been well within reach, so I'm not sure you can give him any label at this point. He's at a stage in his career where I wouldn't be surprised to see him come up with either a 110 points season or an 80 points season.

He may not win the Art Ross this season, but going back to the day Johnston got fired, he has been playing much better hockey. And with Sheary and Guentzel looking better and better on his wings, you never know what could happen down the line. It's the best set of wingers Crosby has had in years... Possibly since he got into the league.

I'm saying it's unlikely that he will play again this season. As what reason is there to ice him? He has many stretches of 2 GP 0 points....

No, because all of those are in the mid-to-high 80s. Also, they'd pro-rate to around 90 over 82 games. An "80 point player" implies a player who finishes with around 80 points on average (e.g. 78-82 if we want to use a relatively large range).

These "XX" point labels are useless. 80 points the last three years was a lot different than 80 points before that.

Crosby is in the phase of his career where teams key on him and uncalled obstruction is through the roof again. its going to be hard for anyone to climb routinely into the 100's as injuries go up and penalties go down...

So we have Crosby on that list and...?

Kane doesn't make the cut, neither does Backstrom, Benn, or Ovechkin. McDavid has only exceeded 80+ once. The 80+ club the past three (actually four) seasons appears to be a pretty damn elite and lonely one for Crosby.

What phase of his career were teams not keying on him and attempting to obstruct?

Uhhhh no.

88 in 74 = 98 pt pace
85 in 78 = 89 pt pace
84 in 77 = 89 pt pace

3 yr avg = 92. That would make him a 90+ pt player.

Well, no.

He's scored more than 80 points and will likely hit 90 again this season. How can you say someone is an 80 point player when they're getting 85+?

It makes no sense.
