More on Nyquist. And the connections get 20 points towards the 2016 Derby for winning this race.

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2015/10/nyquist_owned_by_diehard_red_w.html

Nyquist, the hockey player, said he heard about the horse being named after him.

"It's kind of a fun little thing," Nyquist said recently. "I saw it a few weeks ago when he won some big tournament. Some people were telling me about it. I was thinking about reaching out to (Reddam) and wishing him luck. Hopefully, the horse keeps running fast."

The DRF lists Pharoah with a career-best 120 Beyer rating for the race. Pharoah's final chart:

Black Tie Affair went gate-to-wire and beat two Kentucky Derby winners in the 1991 Classic to earn his 120 rating. Unbridled came on at the end to finish in the money. Strike the Gold had a bad start. BTA was an Irish-bred horse.

Wonder why they spelled it with a U and not a V. The player that is, seems like most Swedes follow the Q with a V.

Someone from ABR is Periscoping Pharoah right now, he's supposed to be coming out to party.

Maria Borell is no longer the trainer of Runhappy. Story after the story you never hear. Sounds like the she and the racing manager were at odds. Manager wanted him to go to the track, Maria didn't because he had heat in the ankle. Owner's not going to side with an unknown trainer of like 6 other horses. So, she's out.

Internal bickering is nothing new but highly uncommon to this level. Very strange circumstances.

"(Runhappy) had (filling) and heat in an ankle this morning, (and McIngvale’s racing manager Laura Wohlers) wanted to send him to the track," Borell said on the social network. "Now she tells me I'm gone… Just went from the best day of my life to the worst day of my life… Since the King’s Bishop, it's been a fight about everyone wanting to change everything."

Family affair as well. Racing manager is the owner's sister-in-law.

This obviously happens in horse racing, but as one of the darling stories of the weekend, heartbreaking. Super unlikely that poor girl gets another chance.

Betcha the horse doesn't make it back to the race next year.

Christina Blacker reported that everyone declined a chance to come on air on TVG, but Maria is saying on Twitter that wasn't the case either. So, there's some funny business happening.

^ My first impression is they have a pre-arranged sale or shift in trainers in place. But there could be more as you stated.

When there's talk about the best story in sports for 2015, I hope American Pharoah gets a lot of considering. What that horse did this year was legendary and put Horse Racing back on the map.

Time will tell I guess, but it seems like trainer and racing manager have been at odds for a while.

Also in non-Pharoah happening, Liam's Map is apparently retired and this was the plan. Very disappointing. Either they wanted to raise the profile of the horse/race for mile-runners, or Pletcher wanted no part of losing the Classic. He seemed pretty stand-off-ish when asked about it on Friday.

Pharoah's next journey: he is to stud in Kentucky. Per Bloodhorse "A fee announcement for 2016 is expected in the coming days."

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/95703/american-pharoah-retires-to-ashford

-----------------------

Pharoah will start breeding in February, and Zayat said that based on current estimates, his fees could be worth between $200,000 and $250,000 per stud. Only one other horse, the well-established breeder named Tapit (who earns up to $300,000 per stud) is believed to fetch more.

I only see one name appear in the first three generations of the two horses.

Well, consider how long everyone's said that we would never see one of these ever again.

Larry Collmus really is the best. Glad he's been elevated because of NBC.

I hope that the attention and excitement he's brought to the sport has staying power and it elevates Horse Racing in North America again. For as great as this fairy tale ride has been, the way his connections handled him and how selfless and humble they were in sharing AP with his fans was as equally impressive.

I've listened to Collmus' call about a hundred times so far. I think it'll end up being as iconic (both his BCC and Belmont) as Chic's call of Big Red's romp at the Belmont Stakes.

I think he deserves to be voted athlete of the year. Novak Djokovic will rightly get tons of consideration for that honor as well but I'll be disappointed if it doesn't go to American Pharoah.

As for sports stories; what a year in sport. Serena and Djokovic in tennis, Jordan Spieth in golf, American Pharoah... I can't ever recall such dominance by athletes in the same year.

Time will tell, I know he had the end of the Belmont written down, and frankly it sounded like it. Would prefer it be completely off the cuff. He still earned his spot though. The Classic call I think was better. Looking back, kind of wish one of these races he needed a thrilling stretch duel to nose someone out, but that's how good he was, he never needed it. But, we can wait for the next one to win that, I'll happily have my Triple Crown winner any way I can get it

One thing I learned with the BC at Keeneland (my favorite of the Kentucky tracks), is how close all these farms are. Obviously knew they were in Kentucky, didn't realize they were all literally miles away from each other.

Darley has already bought the breeding rights to Nyquist. I wasn't overly impressed by his win in the Juvenile, we'll see in time. It's hard for a 2YO champion to keep it going as a 3YO.

^ I haven't been to Keeneland (Lexington) but was told by a friend who visited the area, that the track and local airport are within a shadow of each other. An interesting part of the logistics for hosting an event of this magnitude.

On a major handicapping site, Keeneland and Kentucky Downs (which holds a minimum meet, and I think is the only right-turn track in America other than Santa Anita) routinely are graded highly and, IIRC, finished 1-2 in this year's recent polling.

I'd consider Kentucky Downs more if they ran more than 4 days a year. It's out of the way, it's closer to Nashville than any city in Kentucky, and they cut out the land from the state of Tennessee.

Glad we're getting a couple new tracks for the event as well. Santa Anita next year, but Del Mar in 2017 should be cool.

The event returns to Santa Anita next year and then onto Del Mar which released the logo within the last couple or so days:

STAMFORD, Conn. – November 3, 2015 – American Pharoah’s final competition made history as the Triple Crown winner raced to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and NBC posted the highest-rated Breeders’ Cup telecast in 20 years. A venue-record 50,155 watched the event in person at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, KY, on Saturday afternoon. With his dominating win on Saturday, American Pharoah became the first horse to win racing’s “grand slam,” consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes, and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

NBC’s telecast (5:07-6:13 p.m. ET) earned a 2.6/6 household rating, marking the best rating for a Breeders’ Cup telecast since 1995, when NBC analyst and Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey rode Cigar to his 12th consecutive victory (2.8/9 rating on NBC).

The 2.6/6 rating is up 53% from last year’s primetime Breeders’ Cup Classic (1.7/3), which featured Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner California Chrome finishing third to Bayern.

Time will tell I guess, but it seems like trainer and racing manager have been at odds for a while.

And it could escalate:

Borell Says Runhappy Owner Owes Purse Money

McIngvale's racing manager Laura Wohlers, however, contends that Borell was a private trainer, and no commission based on winning races was in their agreement. Wohlers did admit that the agreement regarding Borell's services was verbal and that there was no written contract.

"She was a private trainer," Wohlers said. "Probably because this is in litigation now, all I would like to say at this time is that we don't pay the 10% (commission) to private trainers."

Excuse me quoting myself but it happened again.

Johnny V. rode for his father-in-law and won. Twice in two days. Leo O'Brien doesn't have many mounts but I don't recall Johnny V. riding often in those occasions.

Speaking of ratings....now that its been done in our lifetime I can see the triple crown races plummeting in the ratings because we've now all seen a triple crown winner. I know now I don't have as much of an interest.

The final race on Friday at Churchill:
  • $2.00 Exacta (5-8) Paid: $2,638.80
  • $2.00 Trifecta (5-8-6) Paid: $21,543.20
  • $1.00 Superfecta (5-8-6-1) Paid: $84,214.60
  • $2.00 Superfecta (5-8-6-1) Paid: $168,429.20

Back in New York:
  • The leaders in wins through the first three days are Ortiz (4), Lezcano (3), Johnny V. (3) and Alvarado (3). Junior Alvarado, doesn't get enough acclaim. He is a solid rider especially on turf as has been mentioned in prior threads. Ortiz Jr and Castellano haven't ridden yet.

GULFSTREAM WEST (South Florida):

Old Time Hockey wins at Gulfstream West (formerly Calder) in south Florida. In the winners' circle was a person sporting a Charlestown Chiefs' jersey. The jockey's silks were orange, black and white. The horse is a son to Pennsylvania-born Smarty Jones. The horse won at Philly his last time out. A Florida-bred. He is now 35 9-5-3.

Photo here: https://twitter.com/search?q=old time hockey&src=typd

Also, the first race had an incredible exacta with a $60.00 winner. The 12-11 paid just shy of $4,000 and the $1 tri paid $28,000+.

DEL MAR (San Diego area):

Meanwhile, on the other coast, Ontario-bred Esposito wins in his second career race.

Thomas Proctor trains both OTH and Esposito.
