In your opinion, are big clean hits penalized by refs?

No. They obviously catch the eyes of everyone, so I'm sure that sometimes refs make mistakes, only partly see the hit, and call it mostly based on the result. That's a mistake, but I'm sure that any ref that has a clear view of a big (clean) hit, would never call it.

Even "clean" hits cause way more head injuries than they're worth, so yeah, they should be penalized.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Perhaps I'm zoned out today. If it is a "clean" hit it isn't against the rules by definition. Is the question are refs calling clean hits as penalties?
