If he sucks in this year's playoffs, why would you be confident that he will be great next year?

For the same reason I believed Paul Martin was still a good hockey player even after his terrible year here. He has been too good for too long for even a full bad year to make me believe he's anything less than a very good hockey player.

UnderratedBrooks44 said:
He's been producing about the same. He had 7 shots against Carolina and his goal was much needed. That's the exception though. Other than that game it's been the usual from him.

He has 10 points in his last 12 games since acquiring Hagelin. That's really good, and better than his career pace. Its a small sample size certainly, but its just not true to say he's been producing about the same lately. Going back to the start of the new year, he has 14 in 18, which is also above his career pace.

ShadyMachine said:
So your expectation when Pittsburgh acquired him was that his point production would go down? Maybe down from his 80 point seasons, but down from last year?

I don't think anybody expected us to throw away all offense for a quarter of a season. So the MJ part of his time here I just don't hold against him at all, just like I don't hold it against anybody else.

With Sullivan, it took him about a month to get to where he's been better. With his 4th coach, on essentially new team, in another new system, in a vastly different role than he's played in years. I am not at all surprised he's having a down year so far. Two months ago it looked like Sid was going to struggle to hit Kessel's points from last year. Everyone on the team struggled for 2 and a half months. In the last two months, Kessel has 14 points in 18 games. That is higher than his career average production. If he finished out the season at his career average (which would be a downgrade from what he's been doing for going on 2 months and lower than he's finished with since 2007/2008) he'll end with 56 points. Considering the start to the year with MJ plus all the other transitioning he's doing, I won't be at all disappointed with that. Not even a little bit. Though really, I expect him to do better than that.

Via LeBrun, the Pens are monitoring Polak from the Leafs. I wouldn't mind him on the bottom pair with Pouliot, but I'd hope the Pens would move Lovejoy for futures if they trade futures for Polak. I think we could recoup the assets lost from Polak by trading Lovejoy.

"From the minds that brought you Lovejoy for Despres comes the heart warming tale of more milk and cookies..."

?

I'm bored.

This team has exhausted its stable of trade chips.

Knowing this moronic team's asset valuation, we'd likely see a 2nd and a prospect moved for Polak.

Let's help the Leafs rebuild!

Pittsburgh Penguins
INCOMING = Jamie McGinn, Matt Moulson (salary retained), Dwight King and Jordan Nolan

OUTGOING = Beau Bennett, Josh Archibald, Tyler Biggs, Ben Lovejoy, Tim Erixon and a 2016 fifth-round pick

Matt Moulson is awful and is literally the exact opposite of what players we should be targeting. We also don't have nearly that many available spots in our bottom-6.

With the Kings waiving and demoting Ehrhoff, I wonder if they'd do King for Cole. King has 2 more years on his deal at $1.95 million per, which is only a $150k difference from Cole.

No thanks. On any of that. King and Nolan add size and toughness, but I don't want McGinn or Moulson.

of course we are. But do we want to give up the assets to get him, and then pay him what he wants? I don't know that we should. I like him in theory, but he gets about 1/3 of his production on the PP. That worries me for a guy that doesn't have all that much production to begin with. This year 18 of his 37 points are on the PP. Last year it was 12 of 28. The year before that looks good with 16 of 51 being on the PP. I like him, but he has one 35 ES point season, and has never gotten out of the 20s other than that. And we know he won't get much PP time here.

I'm worried that price tag might be Sprong. Not the price I'd want to pay, but when you consider this management's mandate is "win now", Boedker fits that more than Sprong does.

I'd rather not have Nolan or King, both would be terrible for the style the Pens play now, you want big guys that will be behind on the play? Cool, I don't.

I'd rather get Clifford from the Kings for Cole. Or to expand it...

Bonino + Cole for Clifford & Lewis + a pick from the Kings (maybe a 3rd).

Lewis would be a nice addition with his speed and size and Clifford as well.

I bet a lot of teams are eyeing Boedker. I also bet a lot of those teams have a better first assets to dangle for Boedker than a 2nd round pick or Jarry.

I'd trade Sprong for Boedker if we could re-sign him to a deal around what Frolik got (long term at like $4.5 million per). Boedker fits our window and also fills a much bigger need than Sprong does. But again, you have no clue if you can re-sign a player before you trade for him, so that premise gets eliminated pretty quickly.

Lebrun keeps saying on Montreal radio that the Pens are "eyeing" Boedker.

Hmm... I hope we don't overpay for him. He racked a lot of assists up on the point on the pp, a spot where he would not play with us.
I like his overall skillset (good shot, good speed) but I'm not sure he would have the smarts to play with Sid.
Would be interesting to see how our lines would look like, assuming Kunitz wouldn't be involved for cap reasons.

Dwight King is literally better than every single player we have in our bottom six at pretty much every facet of the game. You are definitely not getting him for Cole without throwing in a high draft pick. Also, you've also never seen him play if you think he would be behind the play. He has consistently been the third wing of the Carter - Toffoli line. If we acquired him, I'm sure you could put him with Malkin and Kessel and move Hagelin up with Crosby.

Good then.

I doubt the Kings are even shopping him unless it's an overpayment. He fits their style of play and the slower West.
