If McDavid wins the Art Ross, it will be the most impressive win since...?

Kane's is more impressive for me, no one else was on his level that year.

When you consider that Kane had 37 powerplay points, his chemistry with Panarin at even strength and on the powerplay, far better puck moving defensemen behind him, Kane's 68.5 offensive zone start % compared to McDavid's 55.6, and McDavid's better possession metrics both normal and relative it's tough to say Kane's season is more impressive for me, especially given that McDavid will likely end up with as many or more points anyway. You could argue that scoring is up this year, but that's because of powerplays, something Kane benefited from far more than McDavid has been able to due to circumstances largely out of his control.

To be fair, I don't think the issue with the Oilers is a lack of top end talent. RNH and Draisaitl are both really good and spend a good amount of minutes with McDavid. The issues are just with everything else. That's one reason for why McDavid's ES production has continued to be strong despite being on a bad team, the Oilers can at least make 1 good line. They just can't make anything beyond that.

Who is their 4th best player after those 3? Lucic? Strome? Not exactly many great choices.

The issue with the Oilers(this season) is we have 3 good forwards, 1 good Dman, and 0 good goalies.

It's a testament to how good those forwards are that we have 34 wins, really.

>McDavid has no support.

>Draisaitl is an elite player.

pick one

We have Draisaitl and he’s a damn good player.

Do you not agree that Pittsburgh, that has Malkin, Crosby, Kessel, Letang or Tampa Bay, with Kucherov, Stamkos, Hedman, might have a bit more support for which ever played is also in the running for the Art Ross?

Demolishing your peers is certainly not winning the Art Ross by 3 points.
He hasn’t won the Art Ross by 3 points though. The season isn’t over; maybe he wins it by 8-10. That’s pretty unlikely but he’s absolutely on fire right now while Kucherov has seemingly cooled off. Again, what would constitute demolishing his peers? Would a 10 point lead suffice? 20? 30?

Even if he wins it wasn't as impressive as he can be. His best years are ahead of him for sure.

I know the season is not over, but that also means he might not win it. 10 points sure. Not sure if I'd call it "demolishing" but it would definitely be very impressive. Just for kicks, below is the gaps for the last 10 years of Art Ross winners:

I think what this chart demonstrates is that if he wins it, the most impressive aspect will be that he's done it two years in a row.

I guess if you are especially impressed by his ability to stay healthy.

It's certainly very impressive, but he's also been playing with no pressure all year. The hype around the Oilers died down almost immediately with their bad start, and then they realistically had no chance at coming back to get a playoff spot by the time January rolled around.

good point. McDavid was 20th in scoring back when the Oilers had a shot at the playoffs. Since the time they had no realistic chance at postseason McDavid has been on fire.

Imagine Connor's point totals had the Oilers had even a mediocre PP.

That PP Jay Woodcroft has them playing is a momentum killing stink bomb.
