If games were 3 on 3 for 60 minutes, who wins the Presidents' Trophy

It's the off-season right? :)

*Bear in mind shifting will need to take place, so you can't just name a team with a very offensive top line. You need to consider a whole game, and if your forwards are really lax defensively, it may hurt their chances of winning.

Penguins are up there?

The topic clearly says 3on3 for 60 minutes a game, not 5. I doubt LAK stays at the top when guys like Nolan get their minutes in

Not necessarily. They played a lot more overtime than the other teams that's why they have more wins than the others. Some teams have only played 2-3 OT this year.

I initially thought this was a silly thread, but as I was thinking more into it, it got more interesting.

Teams would probably alternate between 2F-1D and 1F-2D throughout the game, it would be pretty interesting.

It is pretty hard to judge but I would say most of the best teams right now would excel. I cannot imagine a current bottom feeder team making it to the top of the league because of this new format, or vice versa.

i feel like pretty quickly the lines between F and D would blurr, and players would be expected to be atleast as good as a good 3rd liner and an average 2nd pairing D on both sides of the puck.

Kings have the best record, but I agree with those that say they don't have the depth of elite skaters to do it for more than 5 minutes.

I think Karlsson and McDavid would obviously be even better.

I think the Pens would be ultra dangerous.

I think reeeally fast defencemen like Seth Jones would be extra valuable.

Karlsson probably leads the league in points, but I agree I think the Pens end up on top. D seems to be much less important in a 3 v 3 format.

If this happens im happy to have Carey Price. 3 on 3 for 60min would be hard and show a lot of goalies weaknesses

I mean if you're talking about teams' 15th forwards, of course you're gonna run into issues...yes, Nolan is our 15th forward.

Kings have been rolling Kopitar/Carter/Doughty and Pearson/Toffoli/Martinez to success this year and it's mostly been that 2nd unit getting it done. I can imagine they slap Gabby back in next to Kopitar and could run yet another unit with Carter/Dowd/Muzzin and still be fine, beyond that it gets sketchy, but I think it would for most teams, and the kings depth players are fast and strong possession players, so I don't think it's as bad as some are making it seem.

In other words, if you're going to go straight to Nolan for the Kings, look at all the other teams' 15th forwards as well. Still think Kings would be one of the best.

One of the things with 3 vs 3 is that you need good 2-Way players. I think people forget about the defensive side of the equation. You can hide a purely offensive guy 5 vs 5, but you'll get killed 3 vs 3 if he needs to defend. I don't think enough credit goes to the defensive prowess of Kopitar/Carter/Doughty and even Toffoli/Pearson/Martinez, which is one of the reasons for the Kings (and Chicago's with Toews, Hossa, Keith, etc) success.

I'm surprised nobodies mentioned the jets. I think in a full 3 on 3 game they'd be near top of the league provided their goaltending gets sorted out.

They crossed my mind, but I still take the Pens (Murray makes it easy). Jets would be fun to watch too.

Correct and this is exactly one reason why Nashville is absolutely terrible in 3 on 3, because they lack good 2-way forward heck even 2-way defensive depth. Once they are caught making a mistake, it's over. That being said Calgary is particularly great in 2-way forward depth either, but they're fantastic on 3 on 3.

Nashville has been unlucky

they tend to have possession throughout 3 on 3 but still lose

Kings had some wins in OT when they were on PP, so it was 4 on 3. I can recall Kopitar *cough* drawing some calls at the end of regulation.
