How Would Hockey Change If There Was No Trade Deadline?

Playoff bound teams would wait longer to make trades for cap flexibility. Then they'd trade away every asset they had after the season ends, bringing in hugely expensive players when there is no cap in the playoffs. As teams got deeper into the playoffs they would continue to add talentuntil in the finals you basically had two super teams adding everything they can because there is no cap and they are in the finals.

In short, it would be a horrible idea.

The overpayments that teams would make during the playoffs would be hilarious and entertaining

Especially a team that suffers some injuries. Would also make it so risky though, imagine trading for a rental to try and help you win game 7 and then you lose. That's an expensive 1 game.

I'd trade all my players on expiring contracts that I intend on re-signing to rivals so they can sabotage them.

The idea of every playoffs becoming an escalation of crazy trades to see who wins the arms race sounds really entertaining tbh.

At that point just go all out and add a loan clause possibility in trades so players can return to their original teams after the playoffs when they have years left on their contracts.

Would be pretty crazy to see teams in the finals get reinforcements in the middle of series. The prices would be sky high as it would be the seller's market. "Do you want to win the cup? Give us those 1st rounders and your top prospect".

I'm pretty sure if they dumped the TDL, other rules would change to compensate. First one would be to extend the cap into the playoffs to prevent the kind of escalation you described. That would reduce the mayhem, but we'd still see some weird trades – any player, no matter how good, could be traded the moment they're injured for a lesser but healthier player.

Everyone screaming about the idea of teams icing a roster over the cap in the playoffs would have multiple conniptions in a postseason.

This actually would be fun to follow. Teams would be making crazy trades deep into the playoffs.

They would even make matchup relevant trades based on their opponent adding a new layer of strategy.

By that point, players on the so called "sellers" would have been sitting home for 2 months.

It would cement itself as a Mickey Mouse league. The original XFL would look more professional in comparison.
the ignoring or the cap is making the league look like a mickey mouse league. I believe the Knights have to wait to more games before they can activate Hertl to stay under the cap.
