How will The Oilers handle the Darnell Nurse contract? Buy -Out? Trade? Keep him?

It's insane how good these guys have been down the stretch. If Nurse be a minute eater with a couple less defensive lapses and turnovers, you guys are good.

Cap hit still sucks but there is something serviceable in there.
I really would like to see how they team would look on the ice if Ceci was getting bottom pair minutes (or was the #7). I'd like to see more of what Stecher could do with Nurse.

Skinner??

You have to mean Campbell, yes?
Campbell's buyout penalty is only 1.5M next year. We should really be looking at that as an option. As much as it sucks to have to buy someone out, we need that space to replace exiting players and upgrade on our 2RD and 2nd line W spots.

His 3ish million overpayment is also offset by Draisaitl, Hyman and Bouchard out performing their contracts. He has players around him that help mitigate his downfalls
True.
Also true - Nurses contract will make it tougher to resign those guys.

I don’t think moving him is realistic with his cap hit, no move and his role as a leader on the Oilers.

I haven’t done the numbers on a buyout but that plus the replacement player (likely an overpaid UFA themselves) I don’t think puts the team in a better spot

I think Nurse has been very good in the past and is capable of being a very good defender. I think the Oilers need to find a way to get the most out of him.

First and foremost I think he needs a better partner than Ceci. You can argue that at his salary he shouldn’t need a great partner however I think it would do wonders for his game. Having someone like a Tanev next to him would have been a match made in heaven.

Secondly I do think the coaching staff bears some responsibility. There is a lack of accountability for poor efforts and decision making. Some players get too comfortable and need a hard lesson every now and again

Lastly obviously the player himself needs to take ownership of his decision making and play to his strengths and within his limitations. I think when he tries to be a 9.5+ million defender and tries to do everything it leads to poor results. He needs to simplify things more often.

Why'd anyone demand a NMC in Edmonton? And why do they give NMC's and NTC's like candy? They should be reserved to a handful of superstars that you're sure are going to live up to the huge contract.

I disagree. 1.5 mil less is Q Hughes money. Thats obviously a great contract but i still dont think Nurse is a 7.5 mil Dman.

I honestly think he is a 3-4-5 Dman that should be getting paid around 6mil.

He cashed in during a crazy Covid season and Holland fell for it.

I'm just not sure how Edmonton can get out of it.
LOL what in the world. Q Hughes money?

McDavid and Drai will leave that dumpster fire organization in FA when they get a chance. They'll go to an American team that knows how to run a business.
will be nice to see Arizona win a Cup with their new Center duo

They won't get out of it, nor do they want to.

If you don't think Darnell Nurse is $7.5 million defenseman, there's really not a conversation to be had. You're just not very good at valuations of defensemen. The fact that you think he's a #4 or #5 defenseman says volumes.

Absolutely no buyout. Why? You’re losing a 2nd pairing guy for nothing. Congrats on the cap space, you now use it to.. get a 2nd pairing guy.

Obviously they could be thinking differently, but he’s still too useful to be jettisoned imo.

Saying nurse is a bottom pair dman is just plain stupid. He's not elite but you clearly don't watch the nhl

So he had full control of any possible transaction and doesn't end up getting traded to Buffalo.

I have plenty of self loathing but I'm not sure I can go there with you on this one. Reading about sports on a weekend morning is one of my favorite activities
My fans jump through many hoops around these parts ;)
