How was it possible that a bust like Yakupov went first overall?

What a bunch of nonsense the Oilers didn't ruin him. That's like buying a lemon and saying you ruined the car. You shouldn't have bought it, but it was f***ed from the beginning.

imo he's not smart enough to play in the NHL it's too fast for him.

I must say, I never liked Yakupov's game in the NHL. From day 1, he didn't seem to have "NHL-level IQ", in addition to having some of the worst hands (for a non-defensive player) I've ever seen. I mean, you could gift this guy free shots from 8 feet in front of the net and he wasn't gonna put them in. What I'm saying is, I don't think there was ever, in any situation/team, any chance that Yakupov was going to be more than a very average pro-player.

Having said that, he scored 8 points in his first 10 NHL games, and he finished that shortened season with 15 points in the final 14 games. It seemed that, under coach Ralph Krueger (who was known for being good with young and European players), he was somewhat comfortable and was making a nice if slightly-below-expectations transition into the NHL. That all ended when MacTavish fired Krueger by Skype (for no reason whatsoever) and hired Eakins.

I'll give the Oilers/Eakins 20% of the blame for Yakupov, but at the end of the day this isn't the participation-ribbon hockey League where the kids who can't play very well get a pat on the back and a popsicle. This is the big-Leagues, baby, and Yakupov just hasn't been good enough at the NHL level.

Seems like a nice guy, though. Maybe he'd be better off just playing in the KHL or somewhere else...?

At least Galchenyuk is an NHL regular who's good for 40-60 points a year. Not what you want from your third overall pick but its better than nothing.
I think having Yak and Galchenyuk on the same team, same draft year, made things complicated for the draft. They both got overrated. I love Galchenyuk, but he is not an all-star or so. I love Yakupov, but after Ralph Krueger was shown the door in Edmonton, he hasn't been the same.

I mean he's still top ten draft material even going back now and comparing his overall contribution to his other draftees. He's Pavel Brendl material.

You know it's a weak draft for forwards when Yakupov is (currently) Top-6 overall in points from that draft.

Tanner Pearson is one point behind him.

Chucky was supposed to go 1st. Knee injury got gms scared, Yak went 1st..
He would have been a marginal upgrade but still a terrible top pick. 2012 was an awful draft at the top and a Yakupov is one of the worst 1st overalls of all time.

Huh.....Thats interesting. Would not have guessed it.

So there's a bit of a log jam behind Yakupov, so he's going to drop to 9th within a couple games. That said, 4 of the Top 10 point getters are defenders.

1. Galchenyuk - 243P in 401GP
2. Forsberg - 237P in 315GP
3. Hertl - 158P in 312GP
4. Reilly - 157P in 374GP
5. Teravainen - 138P in 262GP
6. Yakupov - 136P in 345GP
7. Pearson - 135P in 292GP
8. Lindholm - 135P in 355GP
9. Gostisbehere - 135P in 204GP
10. Trouba - 125P in 321GP

People need to stop comparing him to Daigle. Two opposite situations.

Daigle was a damn good hockey player who didn't like hockey whereas no one loves hockey as much as Yakupov. He's just unable to play the game at the NHL level. It's not the lack of talent or effort, it's the lack of IQ.

Speaking of which, the Habs always have a high pick when the draft is weak.
Ain't sure why you'd say that, Habs rarelly have a high pick, Price was a lottery win after the strike I think, Chucky's year, we were weak but before that?? When did we pick high? Doug Wickenheiser?

I read an article once that said most of scouting staffs wanted Murray. But the GM wanted Yakapov. GM Has the final say on who to select assuming ownership doesn't get involve.

I don't buy the Oilers ruined his development argument at all. Good players always find a way.
Everyone is different. Some players are more susceptible to being derailed when they are just starting out in this league than others. And there's nothing wrong with that. These are not robots. It's a different path, but everyone can get to the same end game.

Can you imagine telling someone on the draft floor in 2012 that Morgan Reilly would outscore Nail Yakupov in 6 years time. OH man
