It's a shame that this America-First league is also ruining Hockey in Canada for growth in a country that will never take to the game.

America is the biggest reality show in the world. To gain notoriety in that type of society you need personality apart from talent. And it's true Connor McDavid is the most boring human that be might living on this planet today, so can see why the average sports fan doesn't know him.

Truthfully even in Canada, more non-sport people would respond Crosby than McDavid if asked who's the best player in the World today. He's so unknown it's ridiculous.

I wonder if he might be showing personality just be being himself? I don't know, it might be an option.

In most of America the NHL/hockey is a cult sport. Look at the regions with strong NCAA programs to get a sense of where it's a bit more than that.

So let's see how well you do, if you get asked in the street.

Who is:

- Brad Keselowski NASCAR
- Shohei Ohtani Pitcher/Outfielder for Los Angeles Angels
- Aaron Rodgers NFL QB for Packers who is not happy with them
- Simona Halep Female Tennis player who used to have double big yabos but got a breast reduction because she's actually awesome at tennis and they hurt when she played.
- Lando Norris - Dunno this one.
- Nikola Vucevic - NBA. Dunno the position
- Harry Kane - Want to say English soccer team
- Dustin Johnson - One of best golfers in world
- Peter North - Pornstar
- Penny Oleksiak - Dunno this one.

No cheating.

On average the NHL is 4th sometimes 3rd or 2nd in a city. Many people do like the NHL in the states and asking people about NHL stars is a joke because they have never really marketed stars - it's pretty against hockey culture. For whatever reason, maybe the lockouts, people like to take shots at the NHL. Also, getting away from ESPN was a bad move if you want to bring in the casual national fan.

No NASCAR/MLS etc are not ahead of it revenue wise; sure they can have better TV ratings from time to time but on average NHL revenues are much higher. I think if the national media stops slanting it and people just in general the NHL has more room to grow.

During the playoffs the streets are completely empty. At least here in Europe.
I guess they are all at home watching the games.

Why do these myths continue?

The NHL is the 4th most watched sport in the USA, though it sometimes flips with soccer for 5th depending on the year. Nascar/car racing is 9th.

Soccer is much higher though. A lot of American outlets list soccer viewing numbers as just MLS. If you add in the south American, and European leagues my guess is it beats out hockey pretty easily.

I have heard this argument before... fact is it's segrated but how is anyone to know that there is a group of people who are watching all of those leagues? While living in the states it didn't seem like soccer was a big deal, outside of ethnic communiities, even though they have games on ESPN, FOX, and NBC.

It's really wonderful this sport of ours doesn't become appreciated by the population of the United States. The sport would become really fake if it did like those other weird sports (baseball and football) enjoyed in that country.

It's best Winter countries keep it to themselves and let the people who live in ugly warm summer locations live their lives with those other sports.

It will always be a sport truly understood and best experienced only in Canada, Russia, Finland, Northern US and areas in Sweden, Czech Republic, Latvia and a couple of others.

No much how you follow grown men playing a game in an indoor environment, you really can't understand this sport unless you live in a Winter climate.

Long Live Winter!

In USA for pro sports

1. NFL
2. NBA
3.MLB
4. Pro Gamers
5.UFC/Paul bros

6.NHL

UFC is only on when there is a PPV. Also, no NCAA at all, that makes the NHL take a back seat as well. Where on TV can you watch Pro gamers play at? Also, if you don't exactly follow a sport, then you might get out of the loop when knowing the players in the league. I was that way for a few years with the NBA. I only followed the Sixers and didn't really know too may other besides certain stars. Now as I follow that more and more, I can safely say on what team C.J. McCollum plays for. I also couldn't tell you on who are Pro gamer is if I fell over them.

- Penny Oleksiak – Is she the sister of the NHL player Oleksiak? (see I'm a hockey fan and can't even remember his name)

Popularity or longevity?

NFL and NBA drank deep from the hype cup and have chosen poorly. They are running around selling their leagues to the world when folks at home have been checking out.

Keselowski - NASCAR driver, #2 for Penske. 2012 Sprint Cup Champion. (mind you hes my favorite driver so I know more about him than the others).
Ohtani - Pitcher/OF/DH for the Angels, the closest we've seen to a two-position star since Ruth
Rodgers - Top 3 QB in the NFL, reigning MVP
Halep - no idea
Norris - F1 Driver
Vucevic - Plays for the Bulls now, was with the Magic before. I think they (Orlando) got him from the Sixers in a 3 way deal when Bynum went there? Cant remember. Anyhow, hes improved a lot the last 5 years.
Kane - English soccer player, forget what EPL team hes on now
Johnson - Pro Golfer, won the Masters last year. (I think a few hockey fans will know about him since hes married to Gretzkys daughter)
North - no idea
Oleksiak - Canadian swimmer. IIRC she won Gold at Rio in 2016?

Why is soccer allowed to use all of it’s league throughout the world when it is compared to the NHL? Does that mean we can add the numbers of the KHL, OEL, all the Canadian leagues and other leagues in Europe. That would be fair, wouldn’t it?
