How many more times can the Oilers afford to miss the playoffs before McDavid asks for a trade?

When he reaches a point where he sees The Oilers as perpetual losers, and with little or no hope of improving.

Really a question he'd need to be asked, as we're not privy to his feelings on this matter.

Probably 3 more years minimum. None of us know how he feels so we cannot say. Oilers should be safe for at least the duration of his contract.

I don't see McDavid ever asking for a trade, too much pride and I think he would pin most of the blame on himself even though he shouldn't.

How often do franchise players get moved these days, let alone ask for a trade? Hell, the odds still seem to favour Tavares re-signing with the Islanders and they've missed the playoffs 6 of his 9 seasons. The only thing I could see is a situation similar to what Karlsson has been in in Ottawa this year, where he only has a couple years left under contract, and the team looks like it's going nowhere, so they might try to move him for as big of a package as they can before he hits UFA. But that seems like more of a case of player and team coming to a mutual agreement to move on than a trade request.

Never. He'll just not sign an extension and become a UFA in 2026(?). He's a high profile player and the face of a franchise and probably feels some sort of responsibility if they lose, instead of blaming everyone else. Asking for a trade is basically saying "I can't win with you guys". He will feel obligated to keep trying for the next 8 years.

I chose the second option, but I wouldn't be surprised if the oilers were working on a trade that involved mcdavid right now.

He's not going to give up on a team. He doesn't want a stigma of a quitter. He really cares about his legacy.

There is no way Talbot, the PP and the D can be as bad as they were last season so this will be a moot point. I voted never.

Doubt Mcdavid asks for a trade. In any event this yr.'s a blip in the screen for Edmonton IMO and they're back in the playoffs next yr.

He probably won't ask for a trade. That said if by year 6 of his contract the oilers are still a mess and it doesn't look like Mcdavid will sign an extension, it may be time to start thinking about moving him. That said this thread is pure fantasy, it's almost unfathomable that a team with Mcdavid remains a non-playoff team for 7 consecutive years in such a parity filled league.

In reality 17-18 was the norm and 16-17 was your so called "blip" #herecometheoilers

like 6 years maybe? and that's if they are like the worst in the league not a bubble team that always misses.

The look on 97's face during an interview in Las Vegas a few days ago when asked about missing the playoffs was that of disgust. If the Oilers miss next season 97 I believe will want out. There is absolutely no reason to blame him for that too.

I guess you could say that 17/18 was just a blip for Winnipeg then

I feel this will better help you understand the so called "blip" and what year it occured. Not sure what your Jets "blip" brings to the table other than a weak attempt at derailing the thread #herecometheoilers

I get when you get offered that much money its hard to say no, but he should have waited to see how things went this year. A fair amount of people saw the Oilers last season as a fluke, he should have waited until now to sign and maybe done a 3-4 year bridge deal.

People might be against passing up the money, but if McDavid had broken his leg and missed all 82 games he would end up with the exact same salary.
